London, UK (PRWeb UK/PRWEB ) July 30, 2009 -- Fast on the heels of sterling's recent rally against the euro in foreign exchange comes more good news for UK holidaymakers motoring to Europe this summer. Fuel prices have plummeted across Europe - falling by up to 12 per cent for unleaded petrol and as much as 31 per cent for diesel, according to Post Office® Travel Services' Motoring on the Continent report¹(www.postoffice.co.uk/holidaymotoring2009).

Although Switzerland again proved cheapest for unleaded petrol at an equivalent 91p per litre at current foreign currency exchange rates, Austria and Spain are better value overall because motorists visiting these eurozone countries can expect to pay just 1p more from their travel money for unleaded petrol but much less for diesel. Unleaded petrol in all three countries now costs around 34 per cent less than in the Netherlands, the most expensive of 12 foreign currency destinations surveyed by the Post Office.

The travel money report also showed a wide differential between the cost of petrol and diesel fuel. Plummeting pump prices - down 18 per cent year on year - made Austria cheapest by far for diesel. At 83p per litre, this was nine pence less than for unleaded petrol. Spain saw price falls of seven per cent, making diesel five pence cheaper than petrol.

By contrast, despite a 19 per cent drop in the litre price over the past 12 months, the UK was the only country where diesel costs more than petrol - making it the second most expensive travel money motoring country after Norway. More positively, unleaded petrol is now 10 per cent cheaper at home than last year, spelling good news for 'staycationers'.    

Eurozone fuel prices continue to vary. The high cost of motoring in the Benelux countries made Belgium 27 per cent and the Netherlands over 32 per cent more expensive than Spain or Austria. The Netherlands was one of only three countries to register a petrol price rise, sharing a five per cent increase with Germany and Italy.²

Outside the eurozone visitors to Sweden will get far more bang for their bucks than last year. Sweden registered the biggest price fall of 12 per cent for unleaded petrol and 32 per cent for diesel fuel, making it one of the cheapest motoring holiday travel money destinations. Prices also fell dramatically for diesel fuel in Denmark (-28 per cent).³

Sarah Munro, Post Office head of travel said: "Sterling is recovering in the foreign exchange rates just in time for the holiday season and combined with the price reductions for fuel and car hire, UK drivers can get more miles for the same travel money. Whilst price reductions introduced since last year are making motoring holidays an attractive proposition, tourists need to check the price of unleaded petrol compared to diesel to ensure they don't get caught out."

The Post Office also examined holiday car hire costs in 20 countries, including the USA, where Florida prices have surged since last year. A combination of higher rental and fuel charges together with the impact of the weaker pound in foreign exchange resulted in a 64 per cent increase for cars using unleaded fuel in the States.4

With a year-on-year price drop of 21 per cent, Portugal rated as best value for travel money while motoring in a hire car - registering the third largest drop after Greece (-36 per cent) and Sweden (-32 per cent).

Competitive three day rental rates and low unleaded and diesel fuel costs for 200 miles' motoring put Portugal well ahead of its nearest rivals - the UK, Turkey and the Netherlands. At around £101, the total unleaded motoring cost in Portugal was just 38 per cent the amount in France (£264.10), where a 65 per cent car hire price hike caused the country to drop from 11th place in 2008 to the bottom of the table.

Sarah Munro said: "This year's report shows more evidence of price cutting activity to boost tourism in popular European summer holiday resorts. The huge drop in car hire travel money costs in both Portugal and Greece is great news for UK tourists and is another foreign exchange factor that should be taken into consideration when choosing a holiday this year.

"However we found little consistency in the charges made for one, three and seven days' car hire. In some cases prices had risen substantially since last year for one day, while the same rental company showed reductions for longer hire periods - and vice versa. The clear message to consumers is to shop around and not to assume that a car hire company used in the past will still offer the best travel money value.

"While motoring tourists can make great savings by choosing destinations with lower fuel or car hire prices, they should remember to buy foreign currency in advance of their trip. By no means all petrol stations accept credit card payment and so it is wise to carry foreign currency purchased in the UK where the foreign exchange rates are likely to be lower than at an ATM overseas."

Over 70 types of foreign currency can be pre-ordered for next day branch collection at all 11,500 Post Office outlets or online at postoffice.co.uk. Home delivery can also be requested online. Using investigational data, as well as, conventional tools of accident reconstruction, such as PC Crash, ATA Associates was able to build a technical case to refute the plaintiff's claim that improper mounting of a single directional tire was responsible for the car accident.

Ultimately, the jury found no negligence on Pep Boys part.

When asked about future editions, Bonner said, "We're committed to publishing local editions of the 'Gas Predictor' for each of the twelve localities that go into our national forecast before the end of the year, and we're on track to do that. Asked to elaborate on that last point, Bonner stated, "New York City itself, for example, is just too big and dynamic a market for our mathematical models. 'Car-Cramming' Reaches All Time High With Young People

Young people feeling the squeeze of the credit crunch are overcrowding their cars in an attempt to save cash, according to Swinton, the UK's leading high street car insurance retailer.

Manchester, UK (PRWEB) July 27, 2009 -- The dangerous trend, known as 'car-cramming' was uncovered by an online poll of 1,000 Swinton car insurance customers. The survey revealed an alarming 30% of drivers aged between 17 and 25 regularly carry at least one more passenger than the law permits. A shocking 15% of drivers aged between 17 and 25 admitted they would squeeze in an extra two passengers and a further 9% confessed that when push came to shove they would fit in an extra three. The most common reason given for carrying extra passengers was to save money on petrol, taxis or public transport.

Only 7% of 26 - 39 year olds admitted to overcrowding cars on a regular basis and just 1% for those over 40.

If caught, drivers who overcrowd their cars can face a hefty fine and up to three penalty points on their licence. Swinton is urging young drivers to be sensible when it comes to carrying passengers and not to buckle under peer pressure to carry more people than they should.

Steve Chelton, Insurance Development Manager at Swinton said: "Not only is it illegal to drive a car with too many passengers but it is also extremely dangerous. Too many passengers in a vehicle reduces visibility and road handling therefore increasing the chances of an accident.

"It is vital that young drivers do not overcrowd their cars and ensure that every passenger has a seatbelt. Drivers who overcrowd their cars run the risk of invalidating their motor insurance if involved in an accident."

Swinton is also warning drivers of the serious damage overcrowding can cause to a vehicle itself. If a car is carrying too much weight drivers run the risk of:

 
  • Dragging - when a vehicle is overcrowded it can cause the underside to drag over speed bumps and when travelling up and down hills. This can cause damage to exhausts and brackets which can be costly to repair.
  • Handling - more weight in your car than it was designed to carry can affect steering and braking which makes the car slow to respond and could lead to a nasty accident
  • Headlights - excess weight can mean that headlights will appear misaligned and could cause dazzling in drivers travelling in the opposite direction

-Bees. In desert climates such as California and Arizona, bees look for moisture. With an increase in bee populations as killer bees have spread across the US, knowing how to protect oneself in case of attack becomes important. Bees are attracted to coolers, drinks, radiator coolers, literally anything that provides moisture. If bees start to swarm, find a closed place to hide. Because bees can stay in one area for hours or more, jumping into water may not always be effective. If possible, get in the RV, close windows and doors and leave the area as quickly as possible. A few bees may tag along, but the alternative is a swarm. If stung several times, go to a hospital for treatment. If outside, run as far away as possible from the swarm.

-Bears. As early as May, 2009, bears were breaking into cars in campgrounds surrounding Yosemite National Park. With an extremely sensitive sense of smell, bears can be attracted to items as small as lip gloss, deodorant or toothpaste. If in bear territory, store food away from the RV by hanging food or using bear canisters. If a black bear makes an appearance, scare it away by yelling, waving arms and throwing rocks and head to the RV for a quick get away. Grizzly bears however are extremely dangerous. Avoid a confrontation at all costs. Back away from the area slowly, take cover in your RV leave the are right away . The more human contact bears have, the more they can become nuisance bears and have to be put down. Avoid bear encounters by storing food safely.

-Fire Ants. While ants generally have nests under rocks and logs, in open spaces they may have dome shaped nests. Generally fire ants feed on plants, but can devour small animals. They have been known to attack humans in swarms. Some people may have an allergic reaction to stings. If so, take them to a hospital immediately. Chest pains, nausea and sweating may accompany bites. Seek medical attention. If nests are spotted in close proximity to RV camping, move locations.
