According to the Department for Transport, every year on the UK's roads 40,000 serious injuries and 1,000 deaths are directly attributed to speeding drivers. So think twice before you are tempted to speed. Saga therefore urges drivers to take a little time to think about speed limits when on the road.

Clean Air America Helps Plant Pocket $700,000 in Utility Savings with new Air-Filtration Unit

(PRWEB) July 14, 2009 -- For any manager of a manufacturing installation, utility expenses must always remain a top priority. Complicating this challenge is the need to balance comfort cooling and heating against the need for smoke removal from metal fabricating processes.

It is essential that if you opt for air conditioning, that you must also have closed-system air filtration, otherwise you are wasting tremendous amounts of money

Toyotetsu America's Somerset, Kentucky plant solved this dilemma by installing a point-of-source, closed, air filtration system for its 330 welding stations at the same time as a 2,500 ton heating and air conditioning system. By filtering welding smoke in a closed system that returns treated air back to the plant, management cut it usage of natural gas by up to 85% for a savings of close to $60,000 in one month (December) alone. This savings stems from not having to re-heat or re-cool air that is routinely lost when plants exhaust smoke to the atmosphere.

Toyotetsu's drive toward improved air:
Since the plant's inception in 1995, the 830 employees worked through hot and humid summers without the benefit of air conditioning. In a bid to improve working conditions, management decided to implement a plant-wide air conditioning system. At the same time, a new filtration system was needed to offset the exorbitant expense of cooling new air to make-up for plant air that was currently being ducted to the outside.

"It is essential that if you opt for air conditioning, that you must also have closed-system air filtration, otherwise you are wasting tremendous amounts of money," cautions Jorgen Brahm, senior vice president at Clean Air America, Inc. (Rome, GA), a provider of turnkey, point-of-source filtration systems for robotic integrators, and integrators of laser cutting and plasma cutting tables. "Whether it's zero or 97 degrees outside, bringing in 'make-up' air at any volume above 50% is very costly while reducing the lifespan of the HVAC system through excessive use."

Installation "according to plan"
The project started in the spring of 2008 and involved extensive use of a helicopter to install both the A/C and filtration units on the roof. By May, 17 air filtration units were placed into service, each possessing 48 cartridge filters within each collector, for a total filtering capacity of 340,000 cfm.

Installation was finished, within budget, by the fall of 2008. At the same time, installation of forty, 50-ton A/C units, along with several smaller pieces, also was completed.

Rapid return on investment
By not having to heat or cool "make up" air, the new system enabled immediate utility savings.

In December of 2007, the Toyotetsu plant consumed 3,921 cubic feet of natural gas, at a cost of $59,371.20, to heat the building. In December of 2008, after installation of the air filtration system, only 556 cubic feet were required, dropping the monthly gas utility cost to $8,407.15. Taking into account electric utility savings when running the A/C system during the summer of 2009, annual utility-cost savings are projected to approach $700,000.

Given the success at Somerset, Toyotetsu's sister plant in Owensboro, Kentucky subsequently chose to install closed-system air filtration units at its site.

Levine recommends that if bikers are involved in an accident, they follow these important steps:

Always make sure the police are involved; make sure you tell them if you saw the other driver on a cell phone; and make sure the police record your description of the accident.
If possible, take numerous photos of the scene and the car(s) involved in the accident, paying particular attention to documenting the position of the car(s) in the roadway. If taking pictures is impossible, draw a diagram.
Always get the names and contact information of any witnesses.
Contact your insurance company immediately and get a claim number assigned to you.
Always seek medical attention first, before contacting a lawyer.

"Motorcycles are fun to drive for recreation," Levine said. "But because of the heavy traffic on Long Island in the summer, and higher gas prices, motorcycles have become an increasingly popular mode of transportation for residents and tourists alike."

As a result, Levine, a resident of Suffolk Country, L.I., said he always sees a sharp increase in the number of people riding motorcycles on the island right after Memorial Day.

"And, with the increase in bikers," he explained, "comes a frightening increase in the number of motorcycle accidents, especially during the months of July and August, when the beach and ocean temperatures really start to warm up and more people are out riding."

Levine, who is an avid motorcyclist himself and rides a Harley Davidson Road King, acknowledges that riding a motorcycle in heavy traffic puts the rider at a much higher risk of serious injury.

"People riding a motorcycle," Levine said, "are not protected from injury like people in a car are. No matter how many safety precautions are taken, or how much investment a bike owner makes in protective wear, people on motorcycles are several times more likely to be injured, or killed, in an accident than are people in a car accident."

According to safety experts, there has been a noted rise in motorcycle accidents, and deaths in the U.S. since 1998, after years of decline.

"This is particularly true of younger riders between the ages of 18-24," Levine explained. "Accident experts long have known that young adult motorcyclists make up the largest group of those who perish in accidents. Further, more than 95% of motorcyclist fatalities are male."

Levine said he also is very concerned by what he sees as a disturbing increase in the use of cell phones, and text messaging, by people behind the wheel of a car.

"I think one of the biggest dangers facing anyone on the road today is the use of cell phones, and text messaging, while driving," Levine exclaimed. "Drivers of four-wheel vehicles are more distracted then ever and pay a lot less attention to the road. This puts bikers at much greater risk of injury and death.

"I'm beginning to believe," he added, "that cell phone use and text messaging is a significant factor in many, many motorcycle accidents that involve cars."

While the increased use of cell phones and text messaging is a very dangerous, and growing trend, Levine said his biggest concern while riding his bike has always been cars that don't see him, and cars that make left turns in front of him.

"Bikers," he warned, "need to keep their hand on the brake when they see cars approaching from side streets or parking lots. They need to assume these drivers don't see them. Bikers also need to make their motorcycles as visible as possible, with extra lights and brake lights that pulse when the brake is applied."

What it's all about

The Congestion Charge was introduced in February 2003, with the intention of lessening the number of cars allowed into the city, the very vehicles which regularly bring Central London's traffic to a standstill. The charge also raises funds to help pay for much-needed transport improvements within London itself.

What is the C-Charge and how much does it cost?

There are two different amounts charged, depending on what time you intend to bring your car into the city. The costs are £8 - if you pay by midnight on the day you actually travel, or £10 - if you decide to pay by midnight the following day. For those two fixed fees, you can travel in and out of the C-Zone as many times as you wish with a day.

You don't have to pay at weekends - so those West End shopping trips are still on, if you can afford the parking, of course. Bank Holidays and the 3-day break between Christmas and the New Year are also C-Charge-free.

So how does the C-Charge work?

Placed in and around the Congestion Charge Zone are a number of cameras. These read the registration numbers of vehicles as they enter and exit the zone and check them against a database. If you've been good and paid your C-Charge, or you qualify for discount or exemption, your registration will be cleaned from the database.

However, if you've not paid your Charge, you'll find yourself on the receiving end of a Penalty Charge Notice, which is a stiff £100. Pay up within 14 days and that's reduced to £50. Fail to pay within 28 days and it goes up to £150. After that, you're in the hands of the County Court, so it's a lot easier to pay your £8 or £10 up front.

How do you pay for the C-Charge?

The Mayor of London has made it as straightforward as possible for us to pay for the privilege of driving around the Capital - you can pay quickly and easily online or via SMS on your mobile. Or you can pay at selected shops and fuel stations, and even at the Post Office.

Exceptions

Any individual who holds a valid Blue Badge is eligible for a 100% discount, even if the badge holder does not own a vehicle or drive. Organisations with a Blue Badge are also eligible for the discount. If you live in the city, and your address is eligible you will receive a 90% resident's discount. Some categories of vehicles qualify for a 100% Congestion Charge discount: alternative fuel vehicles, electrically propelled vehicles, roadside recovery vehicles and vehicles with nine or more seats.
