GasPredictor.com Announces New Lower Subscription Rates

All annual subscription prices reduced by 50% effective 1/1/2009. Quarterly rates unchanged from previously announced discount rates.

Nashua, NH (PRWEB) December 31, 2008 -- GasPredictor.com, a Web site providing short-term forecasts of changes in retail gasoline prices, has announced permanent reductions in annual subscription prices for its weekly, daily, and intra-day Gas Predictor newsletters. The new lower prices, half off the original prices, go into effect on January 1, 2009. Subscribers can still take advantage of the current discount, 2/3 off the original rates, through December 31, 2008. Quarterly subscriptions, announced a few weeks ago, will remain at the current rates.

The new rates, effective at midnight on January 1, are $3.99 for the Weekly Gas Predictor, which is delivered on the last business day of each week, $7.99 for the Daily Gas Predictor, and $23.99 for the Intra-Day Gas Predictor, delivered twice each business day. These rates apply to the National Edition, which predicts changes in gasoline prices for the 48-contiguous United States, and to each of the Local Editions, which predict the ranges of gasoline prices for each of several cities in the United States. The newsletters are delivered via e-mail at about 4:30 PM Eastern Time, and also at about 12:30 PM Eastern Time for the Intra-Day version.

Currently, until the end of December, GasPredictor.com is offering a 66% discount off the original prices on all annual subscriptions to the National Edition. After December 31, the new rates will go into effect, but for the next few days, the current discount is still a bargain.

There are strict limits on the number of subscriptions that will be issued for the National Edition and for each locality. Once a given edition is sold out, no new subscriptions will be sold unless some subscribers let their subscriptions lapse.

GasPredictor.com had expected to sell out of the National Edition subscriptions, but as gas prices continue to fall, demand for the Gas Predictor has been weaker than expected. Chuck Bonner, founder and lead analyst for GasPredictor.com, says that people who are undecided would be well advised to subscribe while they can. "It's inevitable that gas prices are going to start rising again, and probably suddenly, so it is likely that all available subscriptions will be filled quickly once the 'pain at the pump' sets in again," Bonner says.

The new price schedule is based on the assumption that GasPredictor.com's forecasts can save subscribers about two cents per gallon each time they gas up. "Someone who buys about twelve gallons a week will save over twelve dollars a year, which is more than four times the $3.99 subscription," Bonner says, using the annual subscription to the Weekly Gas Predictor as an example. He continues, "People who buy more gas than that might benefit from our Daily or Intra-Day Gas Predictor, but they'll have to do the math to see if it makes sense for them."

Annual and quarterly subscriptions to the Weekly, Daily, and Intra-Day Gas Forecast are available exclusively through the Web site, at http://www.gaspredictor.com/SubscribeMain.htm.

Tough Automotive Climate Requires Unique Cross-Promotion - From Magic Trick to Cheap Trick

For the past five years, the team at automotive accessory manufacturer RealWheels Corporation (RWC) has been creating some of the coolest themed vehicles in the nation. At the automotive industry's huge SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) event in Las Vegas, they showcased their Cheap Trick Dream Police Tactical Vehicle. This Chevy Avalache is dressed up in RealWheels accessories with Rock Band 2 hooked up to a TV and sound system in the back to honor the legendary rock band Cheap Trick.

Gurnee, IL (Vocus/PRWEB ) December 31, 2008 -- The ability to successfully connect two seemingly unrelated products is known as cross-promotion. For the past five years, the team at automotive accessory manufacturer RealWheels Corporation (RWC) has been creating some of the coolest themed vehicles in the nation. Their unique vehicle concepts and unusual partnering are exactly what has kept their company, and accessory products growing in popularity. So, in a year when not many in the automotive accessory business are celebrating, RWC once again successfully created a party-like atmosphere at the automotive industry's huge SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) event in Las Vegas, bringing attention to their innovative vehicle concepts, high-end products, and even some legendary Rock & Roll.

Cheap Trick Dream Police Tactical Vehicle
Cheap Trick Dream Police Tactical Vehicle

The challenge is to create a complete marketing campaign around the vehicle's design.
''Most anyone can build a cool car,'' explains RWC Vice President of Marketing, Jhan R. Dolphin. "The challenge is to create a complete marketing campaign around the vehicle's design." Dolphin, whose out-of-the-box marketing concepts were described by AutoWeek magazine as "A new era in cross-promotion", has re-written the book on how a vehicle can be used to promote a business, product, charity, or most any organization. In 2003, they built a Hummer that rolled on tank treads instead of wheels. Since then, they have modified everything from the tiny Smart Car to enormous big rig trucks. They created the Mindfreak Hummer for award-winning Illusionist Criss Angel's A&E television series. That creation boasted close to $400,000 in wild, one-of-a-kind features, hidden illusions and aftermarket performance goodies. The Mindfreak vehicle, along with their other drivable creations have graced the covers of dozens of magazines, have been featured on television, displayed at huge automotive events, and of course, have been plastered all over the Internet.

This year, when many in automotive-related categories have abandoned any innovative or risky marketing ideas, they pushed ahead with another wild marketing theme. The RWC team shifted from Magic to Music, by creating a Rock themed vehicle with the help of one of America's legendary rock bands, Cheap Trick. Also hailing from northern Illinois, Cheap Trick has been blending elements of pop, punk, and even metal music in a way that is instantly catchy and recognizable. With timeless classics like ''Surrender'', ''Dream Police'', and 80s hit ''The Flame'' Cheap Trick is an institution. In fact, the vehicle was created as a tribute to the band's 30th Anniversary of their Dream Police album, complete with a laser-light and music show that emerges from the rear of the vehicle, along with the mega-popular video game, Rock Band 2. "We're thrilled to be working with Cheap Trick this year," says Dolphin. "They're great guys, and their music is even featured in the opening menu of the video game." The modified Chevy includes special details relating to the band's history that fans will quickly notice, and many one-of-a-kind accessories.

So, how does a small, family-owned company in the Midwest get to work with famous Magicians, Celebrities, and Rock Stars? ''We call them on the phone,'' says Dolphin, laughing. "Fortunately, we've established a reputation for creating vehicle projects that can attract large audiences, making it much easier to attract valuable sponsors, media attention and of course those celebrity phone numbers." Even during these challenging times, America's love affair with the automobile, especially something custom and entertaining, remains a strong marketing tool for attracting attention. The RealWheels team has a thorough understanding of this concept, as does the enormous demographic interested in customized vehicles. They are now attracting project vehicle partnerships from a variety of industries.

The Dream Police project is scheduled for appearances around the country during the next 12-18 months. Last week the project team joined the band at a sold-out concert in Illinois, and next they take the vehicle back to Vegas for the CES (Consumer Electronics Show) show in January. With a reputation for unusual themes that result in award-winning projects, this small company has figured out, at least one way to combat the economic blues.

American Flag Proudly and Securely Displayed at Over 80mph

For years, Fire Departments, Tow Companies, Motor Home Owners, Pickup Truck and Specialty Vehicle owners have attempted to jerry-rig do-it-yourself flag pole holders to mount onto their vehicles, without much luck. The design team at RealWheels Corporation (RWC) in Gurnee, Illinois took this challenge seriously, and developed a Universal Vehicle Flag Pole System.

Gurnee, IL (Vocus/PRWEB ) December 31, 2008 -- For years, Fire Departments, Tow Companies, Motor Home Owners, Pickup Truck and Specialty Vehicle owners have attempted to jerry-rig do-it-yourself flag pole holders to mount onto their vehicles, without much luck. Because until now no other flag pole manufacture has produced a flagpole designed to take on the rigorous demands put on a flagpole when mounted on a vehicle. The design team at RealWheels Corporation (RWC) in Gurnee, Illinois took this challenge seriously, and developed a Universal Vehicle Flag Pole System.

Liberty Flag Pole
Liberty Flag Pole

We've tested the Liberty System extensively at speeds over 80mph
The LIBERTY Vehicle Flag Pole System has been designed to exceed the demands required for vehicle placement. "We've tested the Liberty System extensively at speeds over 80mph," stated Jhan Dolphin, vice-president of RWC. "Whether it's down the parade route or down the highway, drivers can be confident that the LIBERTY system will meet the rigors of the road." Dolphin added.

The American-made LIBERTY Kit was designed to properly match the quality and styling of the vehicles it is installed on, with attractive details and quality components. It adjusts up or down to accommodate flags from 2 to 4 feet high and also features a 360-degree rotation system that keeps your flag from ever wrapping the pole. The universal mounting socket receiver installs quickly and securely to a variety of vehicle locations at any desired angle, including vehicle grab handles. The 1" diameter flagpole, universal mounting socket receiver and 360-degree rotation system are manufactured from heavy gauge 304 stainless steel that has been polished to a mirror shine. All aluminum fittings have been hand polished, and then plated with RealGloss, an environmentally friendly and more durable alternative to chrome. The Liberty can be purchased with or without the heavy-duty double sewn polyester 3' x 5' American Flag.

Compare.com Release a New Tip Sheet to Aid Consumers When They Compare Car Insurance in 2009

Compare.com have released a new tip sheet on how to beat the economy in 2009 and onwards with advice on choosing the best car insurance comparison website for your needs and which saves you the most money online when you compare car insurance.

Wolverhampton (PRWEB) December 30, 2008 -- With the economy in an ever worsening state, the coming year brings more importance than ever to compare car insurance. Leading car insurance comparison website Compare.com have released a brand new tip sheet on how to reduce that all important annual insurance renewal.

On average only one in three motorists compare car insurance online, so there really has never been a better time to make the move to online comparison websites.

Those who never compare car insurance seem to be destined to lose money because surveys tell us that those consumers who don't are almost guaranteed to be paying over the odds for their policy.

With comparison websites thick all over the web it can often very very difficult to select a provider, and with so many promising to save you money online it really is a tricky call to make.

In this article Compare.com given impartial advice offers you some tips on what to look for from a car insurance comparison website when you compare car insurance online.

1. The more the merrier.
Of course when you compare car insurance, one of the most important things you need to look for is how many car insurers and schemes do they search? The more they search, they more likely you are to save money. With more quotes to select from you also have better options when choosing the right policy for you!

2. What is their mark up?
Car insurance comparison websites are not charities so there are two ways in which they can make money from you:

(i) They will put a mark up on the price of the policy just like a retail store does when you buy something. These are the ones to avoid as they are most likely also gaining an incentive from the insurer as well for your business.

(ii) They will add nothing to the cost of the policy but simply be satisfied with what the insurer offers them as the incentive to sell their product online for them. These comparison website usually use the term 'cheaper than direct' which means the comparison website will reduce the cost of the policy below that of the insurer themselves but still take a small portion of the policy cost for themselves from the difference between the price they pay the insurer and the price you obtain the policy for. These guys are the Robin Hood's of car insurance and therefore deserve your business much more.

3. Read the small print
Always read the small print and terms and conditions because if you don't you could get stung, either before or at the time you try to claim on your policy.

4. Interest rates
Many consumers always go for the cheaper quote, but just like with eBay's shipping costs there is always a bigger picture. The interest rate is what the insurer adds on to the cost of your policy should you choose to pay in monthly installments.

Some insurers charge a modest 12 per cent while others will try to disguise their massive 28 per cent interest rate inside three thousand lines of conditions, and with the typical consumer too trusting to even notice this, they are never any wiser.

While there are many cowboys out there, most car insurance companies tend to play it fair and luckily most of the major car insurance comparison websites need to be competitive to be successful.

So if you want to save every penny in 2009 and beat the credit crunch, then we hope you found the tips and inside information in this article helpful or at least interesting. More importantly, don't forget to compare car insurance with www.comparecom.co.uk it may end up being the lifeline you need to survive the harsh times ahead.

Trucking Industry and Jobs in Shambles; TruckingCrossing Strives to Increase Job Count

Thousands of trucking jobs have been slashed over the year due to rising fuel prices and the troubled US economy. Most of the trucking companies based in various US cities are facing the brunt of the enveloping recession. Media reports predict that as the recession dampens consumer spending and other activity, demand for trucking services has plunged too. The whole trucking industry is struggling, unable to bear the pressure generated by the overall downturn.

Pasadena, CA (PRWEB) December 30, 2008 -- Thousands of trucking jobs have been slashed over the year due to rising fuel prices and the troubled US economy.

"The trucking industry is in a terrible state, and jobs are being slashed at an alarming rate to support the bottom lines of many trucking companies," says A. Harrison Barnes, CEO of TruckingCrossing, a leading job board for trucking professionals.

The trucking industry is in a terrible state, and jobs are being slashed at an alarming rate to support the bottom lines of many trucking companies
Trucks move most of the nation's raw materials and crops to factories and processing plants. Then trucks transport those finished goods and spare parts to wholesalers and retailers. The trucking sector has always been a good indicator of broader economic health, reflecting the economy's boom-and-bust cycles. Four in five American communities consume goods that are delivered only by truck.

This year, Con-way's freight volume fell 3.8% in October from the year before, and 9.2% in November. The company announced 1,450 layoffs, cutting 8% of its workforce. Also, Oregon County has about 720 trucking jobs at a truck plant in peril due to the economic slowdown. A truck plant at Oshawa, Ontario, was closed down too, by General Motors, which is facing bankruptcy if not able to recover quickly. Various trucking companies are out of business because of less consumer spending and rising unemployment across other sectors too.

Barnes says, "The trucking sector is facing a lean period, the holiday season was below expectations too, and now is the crucial time to keep the industry operating as efficiently as possible. TruckingCrossing, the leading trucking job provider in the US, faces a Herculean task to scour for more and more http:www.truckingcrossing.com [jobs for trucking professionals as soon as possible."

"The job site is doing fairly well recently, with more than 5,755 jobs being active and currently posted on the site in spite of the looming recession," adds Barnes.

"There are still many trucking jobs out there. We want to find them all."

RV Industry Leaders Continue to Make Adjustments to Meet the Challenges of Today's Economy

Coachmen Industries, Inc. CEO, Rick Lavers, announced that the Coachmen shareholders approved the agreement to sell the company's RV business to Forest River, Inc. that was signed on November 20, 2008. The shareholders obviously recognized a good thing when the agreement details were presented because more than 99% voted in favor of the transaction. Pedata RV Center's Clint Ethington sees the move as, "one more step forward to combat a sluggish economy. " RV dealers across the nation have seen the affects of the current economic climate and any positive movement is met with excitement in an industry that will require change to move forward.

one more step forward to combat a sluggish economy.

Phoenix, AZ (Vocus/PRWEB ) December 30, 2008 -- Coachmen Industries, Inc. (www.coachmen.com) will officially sell all its RV business to Forest River, Inc. The agreement signed on November 20, 2008 was presented to shareholders and more than 99% voted in favor of the transaction. Coachmen Industries, Inc. CEO, Rick Lavers, anticipates a conclusion to the agreed upon sale prior to the end of the year and sees the sale as beneficial to both Coachmen Industries, Inc. and Forest River, Inc.

News Image

Management is expected to build upon the foundation of Coachmen Industries, Inc. as a systems-built housing company with a "growing specialty vehicle business" to ensure that the restructured company meets the challenges presented by the current economy.

RV dealers nationwide see the sale as positive in an economic climate that seems to be inhibiting any positive forward movement. The sale benefits two large motorhome corporations in the industry and dealers hope that industry leaders can build on the forward momentum it creates to pull the recreational vehicle industry out of its current sales slump.

Clint Ethington of Pedata RV Center (www.pedatarv.com) sees the sale as "one more step forward to combat a sluggish economy." And no one is contesting the description of the economy as "sluggish" whether it's RV specific or not. Some would go so far as to say describing it as sluggish is putting it mildly.

Pedata RV Center:
Pedata RV Center is one of the largest RV wholesalers in the country. Their RV sales began 10 years ago and now reach throughout the US and Canada. Several years into the project, they began selling RVs direct to the public taking advantage of their low overhead and eliminating the middleman (and the typical middleman's markup).

Why Ford Will Survive, GM and Chrysler will fail, and Used Car Dealers Will Thrive in 2009

Detailed analysis of the future of the automotive industry in 2009. Compelling reasons that Ford will come out on top and GM and Chrysler will fail. Also insights as to why used car dealers will reap in the profits this year.

Gainesville, FL (PRWEB) December 29, 2008 -- This year has brought many changes to the automotive industry, and 2009 looks to be an even wilder ride. Regardless of any amounts of intervention, not all of the US automotive manufactures will see 2010. Ford will survive the storm and actually become fairly profitable inside of 2 years, GM and Chrysler are doomed to bankruptcy, and there will be a massive rise in used car sales. Independent Used Car Dealers and Franchised Ford Dealerships with sufficient used inventory and appropriate internet presence will thrive in 2009.

Ford Fusion Hybrid Car
Ford Fusion Hybrid Car

Why Ford Survives.

Ford will become the new green automaker that Americans are thirsting for. Releasing the Fusion Hybrid this spring saves Ford's lovable American image just in the nick of time. The new Ford offering which gets Prius like fuel milage in a mid-sized sedan will actually be available without a premium and will introduce several new improvements in Hybrid Technology. Fuel costs remain the No. 1 factor in new vehicle sales even with sliding gas prices and this spring the New Ford Fusion Hybrid will beat out the much smaller Honda Civic Hybrid in fuel mileage and sales.

Why GM and Chrysler go boom.

The most overlooked story that completely changes the automotive landscape and will doom GM is the changing of GMAC to a bank holding company. This change means that GM no longer has controlling interest in its main financing arm. When Ford gets stuck with old inventory, they tell their financing company, Ford Motor Credit, to start "buying deep" on those models. A bank holding company can not listen to such demands from GM. When Ford offers sub-vented financing rates (0%), well they own Ford Motor Credit, so to Ford that is like taking money out of their left pocket and putting it in the right. GM will no longer enjoy this luxury as all of the financing will be coming from "the bank." This means that for GM to match Ford's Incentivized Financing, they will have to "buy down" the rate with real money. Also, as the book value continues to fall on existing new inventory, no one will be financing those "New" 07 and 08 GM's that are still on dealers lots. Throw into the mix the Gettlefinger factor and no government, nor private entity in their right mind could or should save GM. As far as Chrysler goes, are they even still making cars? The only way Chrysler survives this is in holy matrimony with Ford, or in a three way with GM and taxpayers.

Why Used Car Dealers will rake it in.

Another overlooked consequence of our recent economic excitement is that the bottom has fallen out of used car inventory costs. Since the used car market is actually a free market, when most dealers are in hard times and stop buying cars and trucks at auction, they get cheaper. Add to this flood of late model vehicles being dumped into the market at auction by banks repossessing vehicles that were bought when times were good, and your local used car dealer gets to buy nice nearly new cars for next to nothing. Right now, with all of the manufactures willing to do anything to sell a truck, a brand new 2009 King Ranch F-150 will still cost you around $40,000 after rebates and discounts. A used car dealer can sell you a 2007 King Ranch F-150 with 20,000 miles on it for around $24,000 and make a sizable profit. With the Obama administration stepping in soon with an agenda of stimulating the economy, there will be more money floating around and more buying. There will be massive amounts of cars and trucks sold in 2009, but they won't be new ones. People are looking very closely at their discretionary spending these days and that new car smell is looking quite pricey.

Summing it up.

Ford is in a hole that they are steadily climbing out of. From the top of that hole they will be able to leverage their advantage of controlling their own financing company to hurt GM bad. Ford will draw business from previous GM customers that the new bank of GMAC will not finance, and will have the weapon of sub-vented financing rates that GM will be forced to equal with huge losses of real money. GM has no way to combat Ford's strategical advantage and will either enter into a Chapter 7 or die a slow death in a Chapter 11 that they will never come out of. How privately owned Chrysler has gotten public money baffles many of us, but that money will end and they will be forced to merge or die. Independent Used Car Dealers are benefiting from the hurt that most Franchised Dealers are in because these once big buyers are sitting on their existing inventory and not buying at auction. Cheap auction prices are actually increasing margins and bottom line profit on the pre-owned vehicle side as consumers expect blowout prices that just don't come with brand new inventory. Right now in the automotive business, success seems to largely be a matter of hanging on after all of the others have let go.

This release was written by Christian Jorn, Internet BDC Manager at Santa Fe Ford in Gainesville Alachua Florida. Santa Fe Ford is a franchised Ford Dealership with a vast inventory of late model pre-owned cars and trucks of all brands.

Why Are Car Covers Needed?

No matter where you live your car is going to experience the weather and that means several major contributors to the deterioration of the look of your automobile’s bodywork can get to work; the sun and the rain are the two major ones but there are also instances of frost damage too.

Obviously, the best place to house a car when it isn’t being used is inside a garage or fixed shelter but that is not always possible and in fact most cars and vehicles are kept outside in the elements often for months at a time. This is not good news for your bodywork or the car generally so at least make an effort to get the vehicle under cover which means you need a car cover that is both rain and sun resistant.

There are many car covers available on the market both readymade in pre-defined sizes and custom covers made specifically for that make and model of vehicle; whichever you choose you need to make sure they protect your pride and joy. Just because you have purchased a rubberized cover does not mean it will prevent the harmful UV rays of the sun. Just as UV rays harm your skin and can do so even through clothing, so the sun’s harmful impact can be felt through an otherwise waterproof covering. You must have protection from both elements so it must be waterproof and able to block the sun’s rays.

Making sure the car cover fits your vehicle is also an issue to ensure the most effective protection you can provide. Remember, your car may be left for weeks or months (and in some sad cases, even years) and making sure that the covering is going to stay in place owes a lot to how well the cover fits and is secured. The material must be durable and able to continue providing protection for years despite being exposed to the elements itself. There is no point in using a car protection cover which ends up becoming semi-detached from the car because the wind has blown it loose and exposed parts of your car to the ravages of sun and water!

A good fitting, quality car protection cover will not just protect your car from the impact of weather conditions; a good car cover will be robust enough to provide protection from physical knocks and scratching caused by people, especially children as well as household pets and wildlife. Bird droppings for instance, will quickly cause deterioration in modern car bodywork paint and quickly provide weak areas for water to work on producing rust spots and worse.

When you are ready to use your car you need to be able to easily stow the car protection cover away for use next time and this is when a protection cover made from durable, flexible modern materials come into their own and allow for easy handling and storage. The protection cover must not crack along the creases caused by folding and being kept for lengthy periods of time when not in use so the protection provided is maintained when you come to use it again.

Leaving your vehicle out in the open without any protection is simply going to accelerate the depreciation in value of the vehicle while using a car protection cover will only cost you a fraction of the value you will lose. Take the time to ensure that you buy a quality car protection cover which will stand the test of time and provide protection for your vehicle and you will be able to enjoy your car looking its best for that much longer.

Preserving Your Car Bodywork

If you cannot keep your vehicle in a garage or other fixed shelter that provides all round protection for your car, truck or boat then you need to consider covering your vehicle to give it the protection it needs.

Bodywork paint is susceptible to a range of environmental factors including the weather with rain causing rust and general discoloration and the sun in particular is a major cause of faded paint work. It is not just the weather that you have to be aware of when you are looking to protect the appearance of your car as there are other factors that contribute to the deterioration of paint and bodywork. Bird droppings are highly acidic and will actually eat away at paint exposing the bodywork so that other agents can create damage, particularly water. Even if no bodywork is exposed, the chemical components will react with each other causing the development of ugly discoloured spots on your car as well as damaging the shine you are able to produce from waxing and cleaning.

Many times you will see a vehicle parked up in the yard or on the drive in front of the garage and a host of kids running around with bicycles and toys; all of these things inevitably result in some form of collision with your car and create scratches, dings and indentations. You need to ensure that your vehicle has enough protection from the elements, from wildlife and animals and simple things like a ball bouncing off the hood as the children are playing.

The best form of outdoor protection for your car is a quality car cover. Modern materials are able to provide a waterproof protective layer which will minimize the impact of rain on your paintwork and the effect of rust which can develop under the paint work and remain unseen until substantial amounts of damage have been caused. You should also ensure that the car cover is made of materials which will prevent the harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun penetrating and causing that faded look you so often see on older cars or indeed, any vehicle that has been left out in the sun too long.

A quality car protection cover will also be sturdy enough to take the impact of minor accidents such as falling branches or a bicycle brushing alongside the bodywork. Obviously we are not going to have armor plated car covers but a robust material will help minimize the impact of an enormous range of everyday occurrences which create so much damage to a car’s bodywork.

You should also ensure that the cover fits your vehicle as snugly as possible and can be secured in place so it will not be simply blown loose in a storm or high wind. There is no point in securing protection for your car only for part of the covering to come loose when you may not discover this for several weeks or months and allow the elements to damage your vehicle.

The best covers will fit easily and securely around your car as well as being made of durable and modern materials which will stand the test of time and the impact of the environment. Once they are no longer needed, they will also easily and quickly be stored and will not lose their protective qualities as a result of being stored such as cracking or rotting.

Using a car cover is the safest, easiest and cheapest form of car preservation you can invest in to protect your investment and enjoy your vehicle to the fullest.

Where is the Best Place to Store my Car if the Garage is Full?

If you cannot get your vehicle under cover in a garage then your options are fairly limited when it comes to protecting the look of your vehicle. Paintwork is especially vulnerable to the elements and needs protection from rain, sun, animals and people so it makes sense to look at a car protection cover to provide a robust layer of all round protection for your pride and joy.

Modern car protection covers are made from durable and flexible materials which perform a variety of protective functions. They will be waterproof and so keep your bodywork from coming into contact with water which will cause discoloration of your paint job and if left unchecked, rust which will ravage the look of your car very quickly and cost dearly to put right. They will also be able to block out the harmful effects of the sun’s ultraviolet or UV radiation; the same rays which cause sunburn in people also cause damage to your paint job and the sun is the major cause of a faded paint job which always looks unsightly and there is nothing you can do to remedy it once it has happened.

Prevention is definitely better than cure in this instance!

It is not just the weather that you need to deal with; there are a host of other things that can damage the look and body of your car such as children playing near the car; the cat deciding the hood is a great place to sunbathe; or a tree shedding leaves under which you have parked the car. All of these and many others will contribute to your car becoming scratched, discoloured, dented and acquiring the odd ding or two depending on how much in harm's way you have parked the vehicle.

Make sure the car cover is therefore strong and robust enough to deal with minor scrapes and hits from animals, trees and people.

One factor is frequently underestimated and that is bird droppings. Bird droppings are highly acidic and should never be allowed to remain in contact with your car’s paint job. They will react chemically with your paintwork and damage the coating as well as the paint itself causing the formation of discoloured spots, dulled paintwork and if left untreated create opportunities for water to get to the underlying bodywork and cause very serious rust damage.

You need to be able to rely on the protective abilities of the car cover you choose but it needs to be able to fit the vehicle easily and be secured so that it can be left unattended for several weeks or even months. More than this, once it is not in use it must be capable of being stored for long periods of time without losing these qualities – older materials for instance, have a tendency to crack along fold creases and this allows the elements to gain access to your vehicle underneath.

The issue is not so much, where is the best place to store your car outside of the garage but what else is there that you can effectively store your car in. A durable, quality car protection cover will cocoon your car, truck or boat and provide an added layer of protection so it continues to look good and is kept damage free for as long as you own it.

How to Prepare a Vehicle to Withstand the Hazards of Wintry Conditions

Excerpt – It surely is that time of the year when it is snowing around vociferously in your town. If that’s the case, you surely need to do something to ensure your car is kept out of harm’s way.Snow is the biggest enemy for your vehicles. It does not get worse than exposing your sedan to its worst enemy like a sitting duck. Take up the cudgels and think of doing something for your car or vehicle so that it withstands the extreme winter, which will be hitting your city in some months to come.

In doing so, you would help yourselves. Of course, you would not have to pay a visit to the repair shop to get your car fixed after all the beating it has taken during the winter months. Secondly, you would also be able to allow your car to run a year longer, possibly more. Here is how you should prepare a vehicle to withstand the hazards of wintry conditions.

• Park the vehicle indoors – Here indoors does not mean in your home. Park the car in your garage or a place that is not exposed to the snow outdoors. This should be the simplest way you could prepare your car for the grind ahead.

• Ignite the engines almost daily – There could be some days when you may not use your vehicle at all, especially when it is snowing outside. On all such days, be sure to spend 5 minutes in the morning in starting your car. You may still not go out anywhere. But at least by starting the engines, you are ensuring they are warm in spite of the cold outside.

• Finish off all the long drives before winter sets in – If you have any long drives pending on your agenda, you should get done with them much before winter sets in. Driving your car for a long time in the cold can only be damaging for the engines of your car.

• Never do any carburetor related activity during winter seasons – Remember, it is cold outside. Opening up the chassis and checking the carburetor in the cold may not be the best idea after all. Even before you could say “Car Maintenance”, the engine could catch cold.

• Charge your batteries – This is that time of the year when you battery could keep losing its charge off and then. A good idea would be charge the battery so it could last longer. Alternatively, you could also charge the battery once in two weeks to keep it in fine fettle.

Keeping your car in fine fettle during winters has got a lot to do with what you do before the winters and during the time it snows. Treat your car like a baby at all times, but do that especially during winter seasons. It is this time of the year that your car would need extra care. The extra minute you spend with your car can only be beneficial for you, as chances of your car breaking down mid-highway after the winters are pretty remote.

Solana Productions First to Shoot 2010 Lincoln MKT in Secret Road Test; San Diego Video Production Company Captures the Action in HD

Take a remote high desert location, add the latest Lincoln MKT from Ford and mix in Solana Productions, Inc. video crews. You'll get a secret road test and one of the most exciting location shoots this year. For the tenth year in a row this San Diego production company has teamed up with Ford to produce videos in preparation for the Detroit Auto Show.

San Diego (PRWEB) December 29, 2008 -- Solana Productions, Inc., a San Diego video production company, was chosen by Ford Motor Co. to shoot the first high-definition (HD) videotape of the 2010 Lincoln MKT during a secret road test in the California desert.

Building on Lincoln's momentum, the Lincoln MKT concept demonstrates how else we could grow the Lincoln lineup
Solana's HD cameras captured the revolutionary touring vehicle in action on a special track built by Ford at the Inyokern Airport near the desert community of Ridgecrest, north of Los Angeles. The 2010 car boasts Lincoln's highly anticipated 3.5 liter EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 Engine, and offers several environmentally conscious features.

Solana's footage was shot with the Sony XDHD cameras. This producer-friendly camera has changed the field production landscape by offering instant playback of scenes. And, because it records on a disc, the crew could immediately return to shooting without re-cueing. This came in handy while hanging out the back of a camera car!

This corporate video production captured the vehicle on a specially built, curvy, one-lane road with the Sierra mountains towering in the background. Other shots required using a camera car to film the Lincoln from the front, back and sides. The footage will be distributed to news outlets worldwide during the Detroit Auto Show in January.

Solana Productions, Inc. specializes in providing broadcast, cable, corporate and internet video crews throughout Southern California. The company is based in San Diego, but also handles Los Angeles video production and Orange County video production.

Ford, HP, Entertainment Tonight, and other high-profile TV shows are among their many clients. More information about the company is available at http://www.SolanaProductions.com.

According to LincolnMKT.com, the premium utility vehicle offers ultimate elegance, space and efficiency. The website says the vehicle offers "responsible luxury," with the use of more environmentally friendly materials that offer a premium look and feel.

"Building on Lincoln's momentum, the Lincoln MKT concept demonstrates how else we could grow the Lincoln lineup," says Mark Fields, president of The Americas, on LincolnMKT.com "This full-size premium utility offers the comfort of a luxury sedan, the spaciousness and flexibility of a full-size utility and the performance of a sporty roadster - crafted with excellence and 'green' materials that make it as responsible as it is elegant."

The Lincoln MKT concept features the dramatic double-wing chrome grille with satin silver inserts, encapsulating beautiful Light Emitting Diode (LED) headlamps that wrap around into the sculptured hood giving the luxury utility a powerful presence.

The MKT concept features an elegant body side chamfer running along the shoulder, with dynamic haunches over the rear wheel arches. Inset into each front fender and traveling through the door panels are chrome Lincoln stars with spears that add visual length to the car. Meanwhile, winged, curb-clearing doors give the car a dramatic sense of direction, agility and forward movement.

A formal C-pillar further differentiates the concept from other premium vehicles by creating an aura of privacy for the rear occupants. Like limousines, the MKT cuts an interesting profile - long, low and comfortably wide. The signature roofline runs the entire length of the greenhouse and remains uninterrupted. The roof itself is glass, allowing in natural light.

As an unconventional surprise, designers incorporated a bustle-back into the Lincoln MKT concept. The classic look creates an efficient, usable vertical space by turning the horizontal deck on end. This provides massive storage capacity in the rear of the vehicle, crucial for any trip.
From the rear, the concept is instantly recognizable as a Lincoln, thanks to full-width LED taillamps stretching from side to side.

The exterior is bathed in a rich Liquid Bronze Metallic paint that compliments the chrome brightwork. Sitting on intricate 14-spoke interlocking chrome aluminum wheels with body color accents, the wheels on the MKT are fitted to 21-inch Michelin tires creating an ideal wheel-to-body proportion.

Cinpres Researchers Show the World a Lighter Touch

Cinpres Researchers Show the World a Lighter Touch

MIDDLEWICH, UK (Business Wire EON/PRWEB ) December 29, 2008 -- A Cheshire-based company with a world leading position in a highly specialised technology is trying to make the world....lighter.

Why? Because if you reduce weight, your distribution costs drop significantly. You can carry more items with fewer trucks; you can get more of them in a ship or an aeroplane without overloading it; and you use less fuel, which is better for the environment, so you improve your carbon footprint.
Researchers at Cinpres Gas Injection, have developed some leading edge processes which can make many of the common or garden items used in every day life lighter, without any sacrifice in functionality or strength.

News Image So long as the item is made of plastic there is a good chance that Cinpres technology can reduce its weight – and the theory is being applied to everything from dog kennels and furniture, to vehicle trim and components for computers.

Managing Director Jon Butler said: “Most people in industry would bite your hand off if you tell them that you can produce the same item at, say, two thirds of the weight.

“Why? Because if you reduce weight, your distribution costs drop significantly. You can carry more items with fewer trucks; you can get more of them in a ship or an aeroplane without overloading it; and you use less fuel, which is better for the environment, so you improve your carbon footprint.”

The Cinpres technology sounds simple – essentially, it allows plastic components of all shapes and sizes to be made hollow. “There are many benefits to using Cinpres technology,” said Mr Butler. “If applied correctly, lower weight parts can be manufactured with lower costs and improved quality.”

Cinpres uses either inert nitrogen gas or water to hollow-out components but the effect – an overall reduction in weight – is the same.

For car manufacturers in particular, weight reduction is currently regarded as a Holy Grail – and the VW Group is already a user. Lighter cars require less power and fuel to generate the same performance, and distribution costs can be significantly lower.

Cinpres sells its technology to plastics injection companies around the world – and has fought hard in the international courts to ensure that its patents and licenses are protected.

“It is a highly competitive market but one in which British ingenuity and know-how has delivered a package of technical solutions which answer burning questions for manufacturers around the world,” said Mr Butler.

The firm is now focused on developing its operations in the burgeoning Chinese market.

“The Chinese are desperate for raw materials to feed their growing economy, and that has driven their foreign policy, and the strategy of their manufacturing corporations,” said Mr Butler. “They are using Cinpres technology not only because it allows them to make things light – but also because they have to use less raw material. It is a critical issue for them.”

Manufacturers also say that the Cinpres technology improves their cash-flow.

“A solid block of plastic can take a long time to cool, and until it has cooled, you can’t transport it,” said Mr Butler. “Hollow components cool faster – which means you can move on to produce the next one much quicker.”

All New City to Excite with Dynamic Style, Class-leading Performance & Ingenious Practicality

Honda Malaysia announced the arrival of the 3rd Generation City. Malaysian consumers looking for value-for-money sedans can find it all in the All-New City, which is now value-added and complete with a dynamic stylish design, class-leading performance and ingenious practicality.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (PRWEB) December 29, 2008 -- Honda Malaysia today announced the arrival of the 3rd Generation City. Malaysian consumers looking for value-for-money sedans can find it all in the All-New City, which is now value-added and complete with a dynamic stylish design, class-leading performance and ingenious practicality.

Honda
Honda

comfortably caters for both work and leisure to the out-going or family-oriented Malaysian.
In his speech at the All-New City's launch ceremony, Mr. Atsushi Fujimoto, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer for Honda Malaysia, said City has always been well received among discerned customers here in Malaysia, particularly for its practicality and economical features such as easy-to-maneuver size, spacious cabin, fuel efficiency and affordable price point. He emphasized Honda had significantly enriched the current model's specifications with qualities and values that surpassed customers' expectation in a sedan of its class. Honda had successfully integrated and packaged style, performance and practicality in the All-New City, which, according to him, "comfortably caters for both work and leisure to the out-going or family-oriented Malaysian."

Mr Takeshi Nakamura, Chief Engineer of Honda R&D Co. Ltd, explained that the new model's exterior styling had adopted the concept of the 'Arrowshot Form', which originated from the idea of an energetic arrow stringed on a bow and ready to be released. "The dynamic form and theme moved all the developing vectors in one direction and as a result, the design now features an imposing and ambitious look," he said.

The 'Arrowshot Form' is expressed beautifully with a powerful forward thrusting front-end with character lines on both sides running from the rear rising roof and raised trunk deck. From the side view, the automobile conveys lots of pent-up energy with concentrating forces flying forward from a high tension rear-end. The headlights adopt a slim and wide design to give it a sharp look, while the rear combination lights took on the shape of feathers on an arrow to express aerodynamic and 'cutting through the wind' appearance.

The 3rd Generation City runs on the newly developed i-VTEC engine, which adopts a more advanced technology. Producing 120PS at 6,600 rpm, and 145Nm of torque at 4,800 rpm, it is currently the most powerful in its segment. It is also the first in the 1.5-liter sedan segment to come with the 5 Speed Automatic Gear Transmission. Both fuel efficiency and power output have been improved and balanced, without compromising one or the other, to achieve environmental-friendly performance. Fuel efficiency has been pursued from various angles, from improving oil retention, friction reduction, reducing fuel consumption in the high-speed and high-load ranges to reducing the overall weight of the car, thereby contributing to the model's fuel efficiency. In terms of environmental performance, the 3rd Generation City meets the Euro 4 level of emission.

Interior spaciousness and comfort are greatly enhanced in the 3rd Generation City with a 100mm extended wheelbase that provides better styling and efficient space usage. It has a more adjustable and variable driving position and as such, providing better driving comfort, especially during long-distance drives. It now comes equipped with a tilt and telescopic steering column and driver seat height adjuster. The tilt and telescopic adjustment ranges have increased from 10 to 40 mm for each direction, and the driver's ratchet height can be altered within a 50 mm range. A footrest has been widened by shifting the accelerator and brake pedals 15 mm to the right.

Developed for the best balance between maximum capacity and practical usage, the vehicle's trunk capacity is now at an astonishing 506-liter, providing a lofty carriage space in cars of its 1.5-liter segment. Unique spaces such as the rear underseat tray (located beneath the rear seat) allow passengers to store their umbrellas and an extra pair of shoes for rainy days. Glove box and coin pockets are larger, allowing passengers the convenience to store more things. More storage areas are also incorporated - the cardholder located in the center arm rest, and extra cup holders are added in the front door pockets, between the two front seats, in front of the shift lever and in the rear armrest.

Drivers of the All-New City will be delighted by its new and multi-format compatible entertainment feature -- the revolutionary 'Advanced Audio' digital media system is developed to be compatible with iPod, MP3 players and other sources of digital audio sound to allow driver and passengers to enjoy entertainment at their convenience. All major operations, such as song selection and volume adjustment, are controlled using four push buttons and a rotary selector similar to the Jog Dial function on an iPod. The system also provides high quality sound output with sophisticated acoustic tuning.

Honda incorporated All-New City with the revolutionary Advanced Compatibility Engineering or ACE body structure, which is an extension of Honda's G-Force Control (G-CON) technology, designed to spread out and disperse collision impact so as to limit cabin intrusion and to effectively minimize driver and passengers as well as pedestrian injuries. Other safety features include SRS airbags, active headrests to prevent whiplash injuries and ABS and EBD.

Explaining the All-New City's marketing campaign, led by the tagline - Excitement in the City, Mr. Fujimoto said, "We hope to enthuse and motivate our customers to approach the All-New City with a heart of discovering the excitement of a metropolis. In line with this, we have introduced an online portal at www.excitementinthecity.com.my to share our exciting discoveries with you."

In closing to his speech at the launch, Mr Fujimoto added that local consumers' sentiments have generally become much more cautious due to the challenging global economic outlook. "With the launch of the All-New City, we hope to excite the market and create some positive vibes to the Malaysians," he said.

The 3rd Generation City is now available in the 1.5-liter i-VTEC Grade E and Grade S variants at all Honda authorized dealers nationwide. While the Grade S offers essential features of the All-New City, the Grade E variant offers additional features such as paddle shift, rear reclining seat, rear underseat tray and 16-inch alloy wheels. These two variants come in a selection of five colors: Alabaster Silver Metallic, Bold Beige Metallic, Polished Metal Metallic, Crystal Black Pearl and Deep Lapis Blue Metallic, of which the last two are new colors.

Starting today, customers can visit all authorized Honda showrooms nearby to view and test-drive the All-New City. For more information, please call Honda Toll Free number at 1-800-88-2020, or log on to www.excitementinthecity.com.my for more details.

How to Fix a Scratch on Your Vehicle’s Paint Job

There has more than likely been one time or another when you have experienced a scratch on the paint job of your vehicle. Did you know that there are ways that this can be repaired without the costly trip to the dealership or auto body shop? The truth is, sooner or later – every car is going to get a scratch, so – use these tips to get rid of the unsightly marks.

If the car has been painted with enamel paint, than the vehicle repair may need professional attention, if not – than you can go ahead with these simple tips to repair a scratch on the surface of the vehicle.

When repairing a scratch, it is important to lightly wash the surface of any material that would affect the bonding of the paint that is going to be applied to fix the scratch. Sometimes, when vehicles have been waxed, it decreases the ability for the paint to create a bond with the metal, creating an obvious paint line. A mild dish detergent or even a mild laundry detergent can be used to take off any wax, protecting or seal that is on the vehicle and could interrupt the scratch repair process.

Next, you will need to lightly sand the area where the vehicle is scratched with fine grained sand paper. When completing this step, it is most effective to do this by hand. This will ensure that the vehicle will not be over-sanded and damage the body of the vehicle, or even further damage the paint job of the vehicle. Never use an electric sander to repair a small scratch on the body or door of the vehicle; this will lead to unsightly marks being left after the scratch has been repaired. When sanding, go with the direction on the scratch, as this will not make it worse.

If there is rust near the scratch, than it can be easily removed with rust-cleaner and sandpaper treatment. When sanding, only be sure to grind down the area that is closest to the scratch.

Before painting, tape-off the area of the scratch using newspaper, allowing a small cutout for the scratch. This will ensure that only the area required is painted. After all, the paint is more than likely not going to be the exact same tone, unless the vehicle is new and the exact paint is chosen.

How do you choose paint for your vehicle that is being repaired? Often, there is color swatches available from the dealership that the vehicle was purchased from, if not, than at the local auto body supply store there should be a sufficient color. Remember, these colors may not go on completely flush with the current color. The more a vehicle has been exposed to the elements, the more the color fades – making it hard to determine the replacement color.

Next, the area should be sprayed with touch up paint, avoid brushing as it could cause unsightly marks to occur within the paint. Next, remove the paper and let the vehicle dry overnight to ensure it is not going to be effected by the elements.

Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) and the Environment

Reducing diesel soot emissions by 80%:

Changes to new car emissions legislation scheduled for 2009; the 'Euro 5' standards, will make particulate filters as commonplace in diesel car exhausts as catalytic converters are on petrol cars.

The goal is an 80% reduction in diesel particulate (soot) emissions, but the technology's not without problems; roadside assistance patrols are already being called to cars with the particulate filter warning light illuminated, which normally indicates a partial blockage of the DPF filter.

Clearly, changes to driving styles may be required for maximum benefit from these emission-reducing systems.

How do the filters work?:

Diesel Particulate filters (DPF) or 'traps' do just that, they catch bits of soot in the exhaust.

As with any filter (think of the bag in your vacuum cleaner) they have to be emptied regularly to maintain performance. For a DPF this process is called 'regeneration'; the accumulated soot is burnt off at high temperature to leave only a tiny ash residue. Regeneration may be either passive or active.

Passive regeneration

Passive regeneration takes place automatically on motorway-type runs when the exhaust temperature is high. Many cars don't get this sort of use though so manufacturers have to design-in 'active' regeneration where the engine management computer (ECU) takes control of the process.

Active regeneration

When the soot loading in the filter reaches a set limit (about 45%) the ECU can make small adjustments to the fuel injection timing to increase the exhaust temperature and initiate regeneration. If the journey's a bit stop/start the regeneration may not complete and the warning light will illuminate to show that the DPF is partially blocked.

It should be possible to start a complete regeneration and clear the warning light simply by driving for 10 minutes or so at speeds greater than 40mph.

If you ignore the light and keep driving in a relatively slow, stop/start pattern soot loading will continue to build up until around 75% when you can expect to see other dashboard warning lights illuminate too. At this point driving at speed alone will not be sufficient and the car will have to go to a dealer for regeneration.

Expensive repairs:

If warnings are still ignored and soot loading continues to increase then the most likely outcome will be a new DPF costing around £1000.

Mainly town based driving:

If your own car use or lease car use is mainly town-based, stop/start driving it would be wise to choose petrol rather than risk the hassle of incomplete DPF regeneration.

DPF additives:

The most common type of DPF features an integrated oxidising catalytic converter and is located very close to the engine where exhaust gases will still be relatively hot so that passive regeneration is possible.

There's not always space close to the engine though so some manufacturers use a different type of DPF which relies on a fuel additive to lower the ignition temperature of the soot particles so that the DPF can be located further from the engine.

The additive is stored in a separate tank and is automatically mixed with the fuel whenever you fill up. Tiny quantities are required though so a litre of additive should treat around 2800 litres of fuel, enough to cover 25,000 miles at 40mpg.

With this type of DPF regeneration will be initiated by the ECU every 300 miles or so depending on vehicle use and will take 5 to 10 minutes to complete. You shouldn't notice anything other than perhaps a puff of white smoke from the exhaust when the process is completed.

AA experience:

The AA has seen evidence of DPF systems failing to regenerate - even on cars - that are used mainly on motorways. Their conclusion is that on cars with a very high sixth gear engine revs are too low to generate sufficient exhaust temperature, but occasional harder driving in lower gears should be sufficient to bum off the soot in such cases.

Check the handbook:

If you buy or lease a car with a DPF fitted it's important to read the relevant section of the vehicle handbook so that you understand exactly what actions to take if the warning light illuminates and how, if at all, your driving style may need to be adjusted to ensure maximum DPF efficiency and life.

Tyres/Tires Are Important , Look After Them

Tires are one of the most misunderstood and under-appreciated parts of a vehicle. Although assumed by many just to be a cushion to keep your wheel rim from getting damaged, in reality your tires are only point of contact between a high-speed moving vehicle and the road. Consequently, how much control you have over your car depends greatly on your tires. This article will explain what tires do for your car, the consequences of poorly maintaining your tires, and what you can do to make sure your tries are reliable and safe.

Every aspect of a tire is carefully designed to provide the greatest amount of control over your car. The type of tire rubber is carefully chosen to be soft enough to provide a good grip on the road, but tough enough not to wear down too quickly. As the rubber of the tire rolls over the pavement, it transmits force between the tire and the road via friction to generate traction. This is made possible by friction, which can be described as the stickiness between any 2 surfaces. Friction is what allows traction (the ability of the tire to grip the road), allowing you to speed up, slow down, and steer the vehicle, thus keeping control over your car.

Consequently, it is in your best interest to keep the contact area between your tire and the pavement as broad as possible. Here, tire pressure is important. Over-inflating a tire can cause it to lift too high off the ground, so that only the center of the tire is in contact with the road. This causes less traction (and thus less control over a moving vehicle), and uneven wear in the middle of the tire tread. Under-inflated tires let the tire ride to low, causing excessive wear to the outer ribs of the tire tread, and increasing the chances of a blowout. To maintain proper tire pressure, check your car owner’s manual (or look up the tire specification on the internet) to find the correct tire pressure. Check you tire pressure frequently (once a week or so) to make sure they maintain to correct pressure.

Uneven wear on your tire treads can also slowly decrease the contact area with the pavement over time. Unfortunately, even the position of the four tires on the car and cause uneven wear over time. To avoid this, rotate the tires to different wheel positions around the car periodically (in the USA, every 10,000 miles or so). Not only is the safer, it will make your tires last longer and save you money over time.

Keeping your tires properly balanced is also important. Your wheels should be perfectly perpendicular to the road to provide the greatest contact surface area with the pavement, and thus the best traction and control over your car. If your wheels are at an angle, even a very slight one, it decreases the contact area with the pavement, reduction traction and control, and crates uneven wearing on your tires, increasing the chance of a blowout. A good way to maintain proper balance is to have the balance checked whenever you have your tires rotated.

When your tread wears down, several bad things can happen. First of all, it generates less friction between the tire and the road, providing less grip on the pavement and thus less control over a moving vehicle.

Second, tire treads are specifically designed, when your tires roll through standing water or heavy rain, to channel water up and away for the road and provide a drier surface for your tires to grip the road. When tires treads wear down, these water channels shrink, creating a smaller channel to lift and push water away for the pavement. This increases the chances of losing control of your car when driving through water or heavy rain, especially at high speeds.

Finally, the older and more worn the tires are, the greater the chance that one of them will burst while the car is moving. Although merely an annoyance at low speeds, the danger caused by a blowout increases dramatically at higher speeds, and at highway speeds can be lethal. In extreme cases, the tire tread can separate from the tire wall and wrap around the axle, causing you to lose all steering control, collide with another car, go off the road, or even roll over.

Proper tire maintenance is an enormously broad topic, and this short article has provided just the very basics of maintenance and safety. If you think you have any questions about whether or not you need to have your tires rotated or replaced, take your car to an auto mechanic or garage.

Real-time Ethernet For Critical Applications

Moog FCS, which is part of Moog's Industrial Group, is introducing a combination of communication interfaces based on real-time Ethernet. Using advanced and proven technology, the servo controllers are said to increase the functionality and boost the performance of aerospace testing systems.

They now provide fast graphics, accurate synchronisation of up to 500 control channels, reduced latency time and complete management of safety procedures to eliminate any risk to the specimen under test.

Although real-time Ethernet is now a common and proven technology, many experts believe it is not suited to critical applications such as aerospace testing.

However, Moog FCS has developed a real-time Ethernet interface that provides the test system with a high bandwidth and an unprecedented level of safety, particularly for high-performance aircraft, helicopter, and spacecraft testing. The test specimen can be protected against single-point failures as well as dormant failures of any part of the control system. No single component should fail without being detected. According to Moog FCS, other systems using fibre optics or legacy technologies cannot provide the same level of safety based on a system architecture supported by real-time Ethernet.

Pim van den Dijssel, the market manager for test systems at Moog FCS, comments: "This is a great opportunity for us to demonstrate our expertise in applying newly available technology in a way that matches the needs of our aerospace testing market customers. Certain tests, such as iron bird, are deployed over a very long time span. We need to ensure that platform upgrades can take place transparently on running legacy systems so our customers can continue their tests while benefiting from latest technology developments."

The real-time Ethernet hardware platform represents an efficient means of optimising test performance for Moog's customers running: aircraft structural tests, iron bird tests, landing gear, helicopter airframe, rotor head and blade tests, engine casing tests, fin actuation loading tests, hydraulic system tests, load calibration tests and spacecraft structural integrity. The new hardware architecture uses two different types of Ethernet interfaces. The recently launched Ethernet interface enables real-time data transfer between the command generator (Real Time Front End) and the localised control loops managed by the SmarTEST digital servo controller. The new real-time Ethernet interface uses specific and dedicated protocol software for data transfer. This plays a key role in providing customers with reduced latency while running tests. For example, the quad-core industrial PC processor technology combined with the new Ethernet interface allows the reliable control of 256 control channels with a command resolution of 200Hz and a latency of 5ms for large iron bird test systems with up to 640 look-up tables and calculation channels.

A second type of Ethernet interface is used for transfer of load cell, position and spectrum data from the load control system to the data acquisition system. A similar Ethernet interface can also be activated to produce snapshots, archives or analysis from the servo controller based on data from the data acquisition system.

Pim van den Dijssel says: "As a company we are committed to helping our customers achieve optimal testing performance, continuous innovation and development in response to evolving challenges. These are key to ensuring continued success. We are delighted to mention that initial customer feedback has been extremely positive and customer expectations have been fully met."

High Quality Imaging Set to Improve Process Performance

In the drive to boost performance and reduce downtime, high-tech imaging solutions are helping to solve maintenance issues.

A high-tech videoscope hired from Ashtead Technology Rentals helped an environmental services company to significantly reduce downtime during health and safety checks.

Veolia Environmental Services used an Olympus IPLEX MX Videoscope to survey packing material in a cooling tower at its Ellesmere Port hazardous waste incinerator and in doing so the company was able to ensure that the operation was completed as quickly as possible, with minimal disruption to the plant.

Cooling towers must be well maintained and kept clean to prevent the build up of potentially hazardous bacteria including legionella. Slime, scale and algae can also affect the performance and physical obstructions can often be found during checks.

In the past, it has been common practice to remove the cooling pack for the purposes of the inspection and cleaning (regardless of whether the tower needed to be cleaned or not).

However, depending on the size of the unit, this can take anything from a few hours to two days to complete. During this time the cooling system would be shut down resulting, in many applications, in the closure of the entire facility. However, endoscopic inspection can be undertaken in a few hours and full colour digital images can be obtained.

The UK Health & Safety Executive (HSE) now explicitly accepts the use of endoscopes to obtain images of the packing material condition. These images can be used to assess the cleanliness of packing material in cooling towers and by inference the effectiveness of the cleaning regime.

Dave Smith, technical manager with incinerator operator Veolia, explained: "We operate the site around-the-clock and had a short shutdown planned when we had an opportunity to inspect the cooling tower. This was the first time we had used this kind of equipment and we were able to carry out the check with minimum disruption. When we have carried out checks in the past without a videoscope the inspection would take a lot longer but with this equipment the process is quicker, more efficient and with full colour digital images of the packing material."

The IPLEX MX is a lightweight, ultra compact videoscope system that uses an internal battery resulting in new levels of portability for the process industries and others.

In another development, Ashtead is also reporting a boom in demand, despite the current economic climate and gloomy forecasts.

Ashtead rents instruments for environmental monitoring, for health and safety checking, for testing materials in construction and manufacture, and for remote visual inspection in a wide variety of industries.

One might suspect that worries with the economy might force businesses to cut back on all expenditure, but as the company's general manager James Carlyle says: "Nervousness and uncertainty certainly causes companies to reduce or delay capital expenditure. However, testing, monitoring and inspection work is vital for a number of reasons including regulatory compliance, quality control, health and safety, and environmental protection."

Health and safety at work regulations require employers and self-employed people to carry out a suitable and sufficient assessment of the risks for all work activities for the purpose of deciding what measures are necessary for safety. For example, in confined spaces the HSE advises, "It may be necessary to check that air is free from both toxic and flammable vapours and that it is fit to breathe. Testing should be carried out by a competent person using a suitable gas detector which is correctly calibrated."

Ashtead has risen to this challenge with a fleet of instruments from leading manufacturers for health and safety assessments include toxic gas detectors, particulate monitors, HVAC monitors, and instruments for the measurement of noise and vibration.

Companies with emissions to the environment have to comply with a raft of regulations that relate to the management of waste and emissions to air, land and water. Compliance inevitably involves monitoring with the most appropriate technology; this may involve the purchase of on-line monitors, but frequently necessitates an initial assessment followed by regular spot checks, so renting provides an opportunity to do so without investment in expensive instrumentation. It also enables process operators to deploy the best available technology whenever they need it, says the company.

In January of this year, Raytek launched the new MP150 high-speed infrared (IR) Linescanner. This new product operates with a complete suite of application software to provide what the company describes as the fastest and most complete non-contact temperature measurement solution on the market today.

The MP150 features the latest electronics, optics, communications and mirror mechanisms. This technology facilitates a scan speed up to 150Hz, three times faster than its predecessor, allowing the MP150 to gather complete data from even the fastest manufacturing processes (Fig. 1). Now, however, the product is now being relaunched with expanded data collection capability.

The MP150 can now measure up to 1024 data points per scan, up from the previous 512, to provide the user to see even smaller temperature anomalies. Also new is a fibre optic communication system that permits connection to existing fibre networks or directly to a PC. Fibre optic infrastructure avoids potential interference from strong EMI fields generated by heavy equipment as well as protecting the instrumentation from sudden power surges generated by lightning strikes.

and#65279;How to Measure a Carbon Footprint

Businesses can now assess the carbon footprint of their goods and services and play a greater part in fighting climate change thanks to a new standard launched jointly by BSI British Standards (the UK's National Standards Body), the Carbon Trust and Defra (the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs).

The publicly available standard – called PAS 2050 – provides a consistent way to evaluate the greenhouse gas emissions embedded in goods and services throughout their entire life cycle, from sourcing raw materials through to manufacture, distribution, use and disposal.

BSI says the aim of the new standard is to help businesses move beyond managing the emissions their own processes create and to look at the opportunities for reducing emissions in the design, making and supplying of products. This will then help businesses make goods or services that are less carbon intensive and, ultimately, develop new products with lower carbon footprints.

The Carbon Trust has already piloted PAS 2050 with 75 product ranges across a wide range of companies including: PepsiCo, Boots, Innocent, Marshalls, Tesco, Cadbury, Halifax, Coca Cola, Kimberly Clark, The Co-operative Group, Scottish & Newcastle, Coors Brewers, Muller, British Sugar, ABAgri, Sainsbury's, Danone, Continental Clothing Company, Colors Fruit, Morphy Richards, Mey Selections and Aggregate Industries.

As an example of the results obtained, Boots, for its Botanics shampoo, has redesigned its logistics network so that products could be delivered direct to stores, thereby reducing road miles and packaging. This has reduced the carbon footprint of making the shampoo by 10 per cent. In another example, Innocent worked with one of its suppliers to identify an opportunity for the supplier to set up a group of employees to look at how they could increase the amount of waste materials being recycled throughout the factory. In the first month, waste to landfill was reduced by 15 per cent, and within six months the reduction reached 54 per cent.

Defra has also carried out research testing of the PAS on up to 100 food products through their production, manufacture and distribution and is studying the greenhouse gas impacts of food preparation and consumption in the home. Environment Secretary Hilary Benn said: "Companies have said they want to be able to count their carbon emissions in a better way, so we have responded. By looking at where the emissions are being created and reducing them, businesses can also save themselves money.

"You cannot see or count emissions when you buy a product. But consumers want to know that emissions are being cut by businesses and this standard will help businesses to do that.

"In addition to measuring and reducing the carbon footprint of their products, from clothing to cosmetics and cottage pies, businesses will be able to offer advice to the public about the most environmentally friendly ways to choose, use and dispose of their products."

Carbon Trust Chief Executive Tom Delay added: "For the first time, businesses have a robust, consistent standard for measuring the carbon footprint of their goods and services. This exciting development will help businesses to really understand the carbon impact of their products and to follow this up with tangible ways to cut carbon emissions across the supply chain.

"The Carbon Trust has been part of this work from the outset and we are delighted that PAS 2050 is now publicly available for any company to use."

Mike Low, director of BSI British Standards, said: "PAS 2050 has been developed using BSI's rigorous consultation process, involving almost a thousand industry experts from within the UK and internationally. The result is a robust framework within which businesses and public sector bodies will be able to assess the greenhouse gas emissions of their goods and services in a consistent manner.

"Our hope is that it will be used widely by organisations of all sizes and sectors. PAS 2050 is the latest addition to BSI's rapidly expanding stable of standards and tools in the area of sustainability and the environment, which enable organizations to manage their operations in a more sustainable manner."

PAS 2050 will pave the way for business to provide transparent and reliable information on the carbon content of their products. It can be downloaded free of charge, plus there is a downloadable guide to implementing PAS 2050.

Renewal of ISO 9001:2000 Certification Continues the 20-Year Budco Commitment to Quality Operating System Discipline

Following a week-long, on-site assessment conducted in November by representatives of Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance, Budco received notice of recommendation for continued ISO 9001:2000 certification in compliance with international quality standards. Twenty years ago, Budco, the Highland Park fulfillment and direct marketing company, put the corporate-wide Quality Operating System (QOS) in place. Based on the thoroughness of QOS, Budco received the initial ISO 9001 quality certification in 1996 and earned ISO 9001:2000 status in 2002. The latter demands that the quality management system demonstrate a complete and comprehensive capacity for meeting customer requirements. In addition to annual inspections conducted by LRQA, Budco maintains an internal Quality Office to monitor compliance and publishes the Budco Quality Manual.

Highland Park, MI (PRWEB) December 28, 2008 -- "Quality is absolutely our way of life at Budco," emphasized President Terry Niles. "By precisely defining quality procedures and ingraining them in the day-to-day execution of client projects, the Quality Operating System enables Budco to perform at the highest levels of accuracy and customer satisfaction. That's why we formalized our quality processes two decades ago as the Quality Operating System; that's also why we continue to so rigorously adhere to QOS and ISO 9001:2000 standards today. Our commitment never waivers," continued Ms. Niles. "Other companies may cut back or eliminate quality processes when facing economic challenges. But not Budco. In fact, we find that sticking to our quality principles differentiates us from the competition and contributes to our business success by giving us an advantage that clients appreciate and demand."

"Basically, QOS leaves nothing to chance," Ms. Niles explained. "We know precisely what steps we take in which order to define, plan, develop, launch and manage even the biggest, most complex assignments. And we measure our execution constantly against key performance indicators like timing and accuracy that are established with each client at program inception. That way our clients know and we know that we really are handling their work properly."

"The purpose of a quality system is to make us better at what we do," echoed Rob Hyman, Executive Vice President for Operations. "Plus, an essential facet of our approach is continuous improvement, which is fundamental to ISO 9001:2000 requirements. We do more than just put a program in place. We constantly look for ways to do what we do better and at lower cost. In recent years, we have been fortunate to experience periods of double digit growth. Less organized companies could not successfully absorb that much new business. But QOS is our roadmap. By sticking to the principles of QOS, we are able to produce consistent, predictable, sustainable levels of performance that meet and exceed customer expectations."

Both Ms. Niles and Mr. Hyman credit QOS and ISO 9001:2000 with allowing Budco to achieve compliance with strict HIPAA privacy stipulations, GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) regulations, and SAS 70 Type 1 security protocols. "With today's growing insistence on data security and privacy protection, sound business practices are more important than ever," concludes Ms. Niles. "Even though it's 20 years old -- and, yes, we have refined the process over those years and continue to do so -- the wisdom of the Budco Quality Operating System is apparent to us every single day."

Kars 4 Kids Keeps Phones Open for Last 100 Hours of 2008

In an effort to enable car donors to receive a tax break for 2008, Kars 4 Kids telephone lines will remain open 24/7 for the last 100 hours of 2008 to accept car donations.

It's a plan that works for everyone

Lakewood, NJ (PRWEB) December 28, 2008 -- In an effort to enable donors to receive a tax break for 2008, Kars 4 Kids telephone lines will remain open 24/7 for the last 100 hours of 2008. Kars4Kids call center will begin overnight operations starting on December 27th at 8 PM, through midnight December 31, 2008.

"It's a plan that works for everyone," says Esti Landau, of Kars 4 Kids. "We found that many people simply don't have sufficient time during business hours to make a car donation and we think this will make it easier for them."

Indeed, the strategic move came at a time when donors want to take a bite out of their taxes - particularly in this down economy -- for 2008, and Kars 4 Kids was eager to cater to all their donors' needs. Tax deductions can be locked in for 2008 -- even if their car donation is not being picked up until after New Year's Day.

"We've used the formula we've always followed for optimum donor satisfaction," says Landau. "We do whatever it takes to make the process quick and hassle-free."

And then there's the kindness factor: "People are keen to give charity during the holiday season," states Landau. "There's something in the air. It's our busiest time of year."

Donors can visit their website at car donation.

The Lorry Driver’s Travel Checklist

On a long haul road haulage job, a lorry driver can be on the road for days or even weeks. That’s a long time for something to go wrong with your lorry – and if you are stuck by the side of the road waiting for help and paying for repairs, you and your company will be losing time and money.

Luckily, most common problems with lorry breakdowns can be avoided with some simple, regular vehicle maintenance. Before going on any road haulage job, every lorry driver should make sure that their rig is in top condition. It may seem like a chore but it is well worth the effort in the long run. Below is a basic checklist of the things you need to look at before a job.

Load

Check that your load is well secured and evenly distributed. An uneven load can cause problems with the handling of your lorry, and an unsecured load can be dangerous when it needs to be unloaded. If you are undertaking groupage or taking on a return load, make sure that every new load that goes into your lorry is just as well secured as the first.

Tyres

Test the air pressure of the tires on your lorry with a tyre pressure gauge to make sure that they are not over or under inflated. Check them for to see if they are worn down and need replacing, and also note any unusual patterns of wear – this can indicate a problem with inflation levels or wheel alignment. Naturally, make sure you also check them for nails and other pieces of embedded debris, and you should make sure your spare tyre is in good condition as well.

Lights

In most countries, it is an offence to drive with a broken light on your vehicle, and a lorry with a broken light can be especially dangerous for other road users. Before you go, make sure you check that every light on your lorry is fully functional, including headlights, brake lights and indicators.

Fluid Levels

Check your engine oil, washer fluid, radiator, transmission fluid and brake fluid before taking on any road haulage job. If any of them need changing, then do so! If your oil and filter are fine at the start of your journey but are like to need changing by the end, make sure you get them changed before you go.

Heating and Air Conditioning

On a long haul journey, you want to be as comfortable as possible, especially since you’ll probably be sleeping in your cab. If it is summer, check the air conditioning, and if it is winter, make sure your heating is working well and that you have enough blankets and bedding to keep you warm.

Windscreen Wipers

You may think of your windscreen wipers as not worth checking, but driving in a lorry for eight hours in torrential rain with broken or faulty wipers is not fun! Before going on any road haulage job, check that they are fully working and in good condition – it may even be worth stowing a spare set in your lorry, just in case.

The 5 Best Fictional Lorries

The world of haulage and lorry driving has never been seen as the most glamorous, despite there being some truly memorable lorries in the world of film and television. Here are 5 of my favourites…

5. Mack (Cars)

No doubt “Cars” was one of Disney-Pixar’s more forgettable animated films, but Mack – a 1980s Superliner who transports Lighting McQueen in the film – just about sneaks into the list for being voiced by the legendary John Ratzenberger.

Ratzenberger, who played the longwinded mailman Cliff Clavin on Cheers, has appeared in all the Pixar animated films and is considered something of a good luck charm for the studio. They mocked this in the closing credits for Cars, when Mack the lorry watches car-themed versions of Pixar Movies praising Ratzenberger’s characters in ever one – until he realises they’re all played by the same actor: “What kind of a cut rate production is this? They’re just using the same actor over and over again!”

4. Creeper’s Truck (Jeepers Creepers

Jeepers Creepers, the 2001 horror film, had a truly memorable truck in it, though more memorable for the lorry driver: the Creeper himself. Driving an armoured lorry, the creeper turns out to be an ancient demon that rises every 23rd spring for 23 days to feast on humans to form part of its own body. Despite being made up of bits of dead bodies, our villain is rather handy with his 1941 Chevy COE which he uses to transport the bodies of his victims. Nice!

3. Rhino (MASK)

M.A.S.K, for the uninitiated, was a 1980s kids’ cartoon series and best described as a hybrid of Transformers and G.I. Joe. In total 75 episodes were created between 1985 and 1986. The relevance to this list? Rhino – surely one of the finest lorries ever to grace our television sets. This lorry was piloted by Bruce Sato, Alex Sector and Matt Tracker at various points in the show and was armed with anti-gravity cannons, a battering ram, a missile launcher and a separate little car that could slip out of the back.

Aside from its awesome vehicles and 80s vibe, MASK is most memorable now for its contrived use of acronyms. The good guys were M.A.S.K – which stood for Mobile Armored Strike Kommand, while the baddies organisation (such as it was!) was known as V.E.N.O.M – Vicious Evil Network of Mayhem.

2. Snowman’s Truck (Smokey and the Bandit)

You can’t have a list of excellent lorry drivers without referring to 1977’s Smokey and the Bandit. The classic tale tells of rich Texans offering Bo “Bandit” Darville (Burt Reynolds) $80,000 to haul 400 cases of Coors beer from Texarkana, Texas to the Southern Classic stock car race in Georgia in 28 hours. A contrived plot sees plenty of action looking to sabotage the plans but despite this, Bandit and his accomplice Cledus “Snowman” Snow (Jerry Reed) manage to get the cargo safely to its destination in Snowman’s Kenworth W900.

Nowadays with the improved road network, managing the journey in 28 hours would be a cinch. In those days however, it would have been very impressive for a lorry driver and well worthy of the $80,000 bounty (which would translate to roughly $270,000 in today’s money – and would neatly negate the need for a money-spinning backload!)

1. Optimus Prime (Transformers)

As if there was any doubt, Optimus Prime is of course THE most memorable lorry. Because he’s not just any old lorry – he’s a robot in disguise! Leader of the Autobots, and without a doubt the best known character from Transformers, he was equipped with everything a robot in disguise would need, including a laser rifle, various additional weapons in the trailer, a radio antenna for battlefield communication and a mobile scout buggy for reconnaissance – perfect for delivering backloads, should he have time in his busy schedule. Many people who remember Optimus Prime for his deep booming voice should look away now when I reveal that Peter Cullen, the man who voiced him, was also responsible for the voice of Eeyore in Winnie the Pooh!

Get Your Auto Ready for the Cold Winter

Father winter is on its way or partially here. Not only that but you can count on it for the weather to get colder and colder as winter progresses. If your car is having difficulty now – what will happen when the cold Manitoba winter sets in? Lots of luck.

Just like almost everything else in life automobile maintenance and preparation are key to an uneventful winter’s motoring.

What can you do to get your car ready for winter? Plenty.

First of all book an appointment to give your car a complete inspection and tune up before the real cold of winter sets in. It is no secret in life that most people live everything for the last minute. In the case of winter time repairs, by leaving things for the last moment will mean delays and lack of vital transpiration to you. You may be spending unnecessarily time waiting for the bus in the dead of winter; up before the crack of dawn just to make it to work on time, so the boss does not give you a telling for arriving late to work.

You can be sure that if you wait for that real cold snap to book the inspection and tune up for your car – then every else in the world – or at least in your town – will be there at the garage or local Canadian tire outlet begging for quickest service in the world.

First you will have to get your frozen, non starting vehicle to the garage. That will involve long waits both on the phone line and then an even longer wait for the tow truck to arrive. Then it’s off to the garage repair shop to wait in a long line and beg for service trying to jump the queue. Problem is everyone else is in the same boat. You all will have to wait the same.

Imagine if you would have only booked the appointment some time earlier – or at least before the worst cold snap of the season, so far arrives. Your car will start. You can drive it to the repair shop. Timing can be done at your leisure. Perhaps the dealer or repair garage facility can even give you a lift to work in their auto transport shuttle. All in all it’s a much more civilized way and manner to have your routine winter tune up and inspection done early and earlier before the rush sets in. A lot easier, perhaps less expensive and certainly less stressful for you and your vehicle as well.

With the routine tune up there are a couple of extra touches which provide for extra attention to your vehicle for the winter ahead – be it car, truck, van or S.U.V.

First make sure that the engine oil and radiator coolant are changed. Have the transmission, power steering, brakes, radiator and battery fluids checked as well. It’s a good practice to change the radiator anti-freeze every year or second year at most. Anti-freeze not only protects your engine , radiator and coolant hoses from freezing – it also feeds the heater and window defroster to keep you warm , snug and safe when driving your car in the wintertime.

All in all the importance of a winter check up and tune up for cold wintertime driving can not be overemphasized. Plan ahead to make your motoring trouble free. Cars need care. Good care will ensure that your vehicle will run efficiently and will last a longer time. Especially if you drive in cold winter areas and in wet or cold climates you not only need to fight rust on your car body but also freezing frigid weather and automotive mechanical breakdowns.

Will 2009 Be the Year of the Electric Car? The EVcast Has the Answer

2009 will be a promising year when it comes to electrified transportation, but due to the recent economic challenges, we will have to wait a little longer for the year of the electric car.

Sudbury, MA (PRWEB) December 26, 2008 -- Before the summer of 2008, very few people had ever heard of electric cars. Then as gas approached $5 per gallon here in the US, electric cars became all the rage. Now, with gas prices at lows not seen since 1999, is the electric car once again just an idea that is too impractical to be adopted on a mass scale? Bo Bennett and Ryan Levesque, hosts of the podcast on electric vehicles at EVcast.com, have interviewed over 60 of the industry's leaders in 2008, and compiled these audio interviews into a comprehensive collection available to the public free of charge. Bennett and Levesque state with confidence, that the electric car is the future, no matter where gas prices are today. The question is, how far away is that future?

EVcast: The Podcast on Electric Vehicles

"Prior to the market crash in October of this year, it looked like 2009 would be the year of the electric car", says Bennett. "But now, many electric car manufacturers are having great difficulty obtaining funding, and have altered their plans for production - some by a year, some indefinitely." Although dozens of electric cars are still planned to be introduced in 2009, very few will see any kind of large-scale production and even fewer will make their way on US roads. But Bennett reminds us that major shifts in markets do not happen overnight. "When I got involved in the business end of the Internet back in 1994, it was not yet an 'industry', but really just a glorified hobby for geeks like me. It wasn't until several years later when people started to make some real money that it caught the world's attention and became not just an industry, but an 'age'" recalls Bennett. "Where there is desire, there is innovation. Where there is innovation, there is money to be made. The American people have a desire to get off foreign oil and no longer be held hostage to ridiculously volatile gas prices. In 2008 alone the electric car industry has seen massive innovation that, with proper funding and implementation, will lead to a new level of fortunes to be made with a fantastic side effect - clean cars and a strong economy."

No single factor will lead to the success of this industry. Bennett claims it will be a massive collaborative effort on the parts of auto makers, entrepreneurs, engineers, battery makers, investors, politicians, activists, and most importantly, consumers - all of whom will be responsible for ushering in the age of the electric car. As for 2009, while it might not go down in history as the year of the electric car, it will be another year closer to our inevitable clean future.

Understanding Vintage Cars

Vintage cars can be a rather sticky subject. It’s an issue that many people continue to disagree over. It can be hard to understand what it is that makes a car a vintage. This is something that can vary quite drastically in terms of definition. If you are seeking the proper definition of a vintage car, you might not want to stop at just one source. It’s something that requires some research as well as asking the right people. Don’t believe the first thing you are told. Always find someone who can give you a skilled second opinion.

A vintage car is a very old car. These cars can date back into the very early 1900s. Though many of those cars are not readily available today, there are many still housed in museums and in the care of serious, professional collectors. Though a car that is one hundred years old is certainly a vintage, this definition can vary depending on who you ask.

The definition of a vintage car will rarely be the same among everyone that you ask. Insurance companies often have their own specified definitions in order to better insure you. Antique dealers will have some great information for you providing you find one that has substantial experience dealing with antique cars. Insurance companies have certain guidelines regarding antique cars such as age and type among other things.

In most cases a vintage car is defined as one that was made between the years 1919 and 1930. This is a good outline to follow when it comes to the manufactured year. If you have a car that falls into this year bracket then it is pretty safe to say that it is a vintage car. Cars made before World War II tend to be in pretty high demand among collectors. There are not as many around as there once were.

Another factor that can be taken into consideration regarding vintage cars is if it is a limited model or not. Vehicles that were produced with a limited number made tend to be considered vintage or classic. If your car is not all that old but is limited in number, it may be considered a collectible with higher value than an average car. This is the type of information you need to have on your car, especially if you want to sell or display it as vintage.

Such things as celebrity can also make a car become valuable. If it was ever featured in a hit movie or TV show such as the 1969 Dodge Charger in the Dukes of Hazzard, it may very well be worth more than you think it is. Even if by year it is not yet a vintage, it still could be a very valuable collectible. If you know you have a car like this on your hands, be sure to do all that you can to insure and protect it.

Doing an online search for classic vehicle auctions can help you see what is currently out there for vintage cars. Browsing websites that feature vintage cars will also help point you in the right direction.

Are You a Bad Driver?

When asked, almost everyone will claim they are a good driver, yet the National Highway Safety Traffic Administration (NHSTA) statistics show otherwise. Ever year, 40, 000 drivers are killed in auto accidents. Of these, 98 percent were caused by distracted drivers.

This means that, statistically speaking, most of us would be considered bad drivers. Surprising? Not really. Human behavior alone dictates that people will lean more towards breaking rules than living by them, so why would driving be any different?

However, no one would argue the fact that being a good driver equals being a safe driver but just what is a 'good driver.'

Traits of Good Drivers

Good drivers are often defined by their ability to operate their vehicles and obey the law.

Other positive traits include:

- Car maintenance - a good driver makes sure his car is kept up and in tip top shape. Things like break pads and tire treads are routinely checked as they can affect the safety of the vehicle.

- Courtesy - a good driver is courteous...he doesn’t cut people off and will always concede the right of way when applicable.

- Obeys the laws of the road - a good driver is conscientious of the rules in his city and state and follows them.

- Observant - a driver keeps both hands on the wheel and his or her eyes on the road. By doing just these two things, the driver reduces his own chances of getting involved in a major accident and could avoid a major pile up that may ensnare other, less attentive motorists.

Traits of Bad Drivers

On the opposite end of the spectrum, a bad driver feels he or she is above the law and can do whatever they want. They often engage in risky behaviors that can be hazardous to themselves and other drivers.

The traits of bad drivers include:

- Speeding - drivers who speed seldom realize that each mile per hour over the speed limit increases the risks of death should a collision occur. Slowing down decreases this risk and may even enable you to react in time to avoid an accident.

- Cell phone use - there is nothing wrong with having a cell phone but plenty wrong with talking on one while driving. Statistics indicate that individuals who chat on the phone while driving have the same impairment as a drunk driver with a .08% alcohol level.

- Rude aggressive behavior - Aggressive drivers are not only bad drivers but they are very reckless and have no respect for anyone other than themselves. If someone is driving too slowly, go around them. If they flip you off, ignore them. Flashing lights at slow drivers or amping up dangerous behaviors due to someone else’s belligerent attitude can end up endangering your life and the lives of others.

- Constant distraction - picking stuff up form the car floor boards or yelling at the unruly kids in the back seat are not activities one should engage in while driving. It is always best in scenarios where your attention will be taken off of the road to pullover rather than to continue driving.

- Poor car upkeep - driving with worn car treads or ignoring obvious break problems makes the car far more dangerous than a car that is routinely taken care of.

If you find that you are bad driver, don’t despair. It is never too late to start adopting the traits of a responsible motorist. The trick is to change your mindset. It isn’t our god given right to be able to speed or chat on the cell phone when driving - in fact, these things can contribute to a life altering accident.

Indeed, you won’t be able to change your driving habits until you realize how potentially harmful they are. Once you do this, you will become not only a safer driver but a more conscientious one as well.

Xmas Parties Driving Couples Mad

Most couples admit to regularly falling out over who'll drive at Christmas reveals Swinton'Nominated drivers' admit to deliberately drinking too much to get out of driving back

Manchester UK (PRWEB) December 25, 2008 -- Swinton, the UK's leading high street insurance retailer, has found that an overwhelming majority of couples admit they regularly row over who should drive to social gatherings over the festive season. In a survey of 1,000 Swinton motor insurance customers 78% said the issue caused serious arguments every year.

Swinton Insurance
Swinton Insurance

I forgot that I'd promised to drive home
The research also found that even when a nominated driver for the return journey had been agreed, 38% people stated this arrangement usually broke down when it came to actually setting off for the evening - with more rows erupting just minutes before the planned departure.

But according to Swinton's survey the recriminations very often don't end there. Their data reveals that even after arriving at a function, 63% of those who had agreed to drive back admitted they had, at least once, accidentally consumed too many units to fulfill their driving responsibilities , having to resort to a taxi or lift for the journey home instead. Not only does this undoubtedly lead to more arguments, but also the added problem of how to retrieve the car the next day.

However another 23% of nominated drivers confessed that on some occasions they had no intention of sticking to the deal and had knowingly drunk too much. Common excuses used to cover up such selfish behaviour later included "I forgot that I'd promised to drive home", "I didn't realise how strong the drinks were" and "I lost count of how many I'd had".

Regardless of accidental or deliberate over indulgence, those surveyed by Swinton said that such a situation resulted in either the other partner having to remain under the limit before driving home, arranging a lift with another guest at short notice, or getting a taxi.

Steve Chelton, Swinton's Insurance Development manager, said of the findings: "Christmas remains a very sociable time of year and many people still like to have parties and gatherings where alcohol plays a major part in the celebrations. However for guests to attend such occasions often requires someone to drive as taking a taxi is often seen as too expensive and the use of public transport not feasible.

"According to our research this is where the festive spirit quickly deserts many couples as the question of who drives becomes a major source of arguments before, during and after such social events.

"These figures also indicate that even when a decision about the nominated driver has been reached, many people later renege on their promise and that some even deliberately plan to get out of driving upon arrival and then lie to their partner about how it happened. But whatever the circumstances when this situation arises the result is that people had to make alternative, safe arrangements to get home. However this additional stress and inconvenience only makes the issue of who drives even more divisive every time Christmas comes around."

Swinton's advice to anybody that relies on a car to get to and from an event where alcohol will be present is to always take the number of a local taxi firm and carry sufficient cash to cover their cab fare home, regardless of their prior arrangements or partner's promises.

Household Budgets Tighter Than Ever, Says Confused.com

Report also finds that many households think credit has become harder to access, and more households are finding their debt a burden.

Cardiff (PRWEB) December 25, 2008 --According to research carried out for the Bank of England's Q4 2008 quarterly bulletin, unsurprisingly, households in the UK have experienced a reduction in disposable income after paying bills such as gas and electricity.

News Image

Confused.com - who specialize in comparison for utilities, auto insurance and home insurance - have looked at ways to help households ease the pressure of debts and increasing their disposable income.

Simon Lamble, product director at Confused.com comments: "We fully understand that pressure on household income has been increasing steadily over the past couple of years, and therefore it's more important than ever for people to realise that there is a simple way to relieve some of that pressure, by exploring ways of reducing their fixed household costs.

"For example, the average saving made by Confused.com customers this year on home and car insurance was £186.13 and £208.62, respectively. In addition to these savings, customers saved an average of £211.26 by switching to a more economical energy tariff.[1 This equates to a total of £50 per month which could be used to help consumers reduce the debt that they are feeling increasingly burdened by.

By simply spending a short amount of time finding the right product at the right price, people could save £1,000s in unnecessary interest payments and alleviate additional years of debt."

Example: Mortgage
By overpaying by £50 per month customers could save up to £12,253 in interest payments and knock over 3 and a half years off their mortgage term.*
*Statistics based on a 25 year repayment mortgage of £100,000 with an interest rate of 5%.

Example: Credit Card
If customers were to pay off just the minimum, ie 2% of the balance of £5,000 on a credit card each month, assuming an interest rate of 15%, it would take 463 months (over 38 years) to pay back the original amount plus the interest of £7,652.93.

If customers were to make an additional payment of £50 per month, this would reduce the payback period to just 73 months (6 years) and reduce the interest paid to £2,009.77**

Notes to editors:
Example: Mortgage

  • Assuming a 25 year repayment mortgage of £100,000 with an interest rate of 5%,
By overpaying by £50 per month monthly payments will increase from £584.59 to £634.59

By overpaying by £50 per month the term of the mortgage will decrease from 25 years to 21 years and 5 months. A saving of 3 years and 7 months.

Suzuki Grand Vitara - The “Soft Roader” Gets Serious

The cheeky little Suzuki Vitara was once very popular and especially appealed to younger drivers. I remember college kids who had a bit of money used to buy them and then “pimp” them up to the required standard which usually consisted of enormously oversized wheels and tyres accompanied by some kind of amusing spare wheel cover on the back. Then there was the obligatory sound system which emitted a blue incandescent glow and of course needed to be pumping out the latest hip-hop tune.

I’m not sure what the Suzuki executives back in Japan would have made of all this. I guess they would have just been glad of the sales but for whatever reason the plug was pulled on the Vitara and Suzuki concentrated its efforts on the higher spec Grand Vitara instead. Suzuki must have been aware that along with other baby off-roaders such as the Toyota Rav 4 for example, their cars were rarely used off-road (the cheaper Jimny was always the more favoured mud-plugger) popular with farmers and safari parks alike. I remember when my car broke down in the lion enclosure at Longleat safari park and I was saved from becoming an appetiser by a man in a zebra striped Jimny.

The motoring expression “soft roader” was born out of a desire by people to drive vehicles that were designed for off-road conditions but ended up in our towns and cities. It still provokes a heated debate amongst those in favour and those who are opposed to such behaviour.

Unperturbed though by the anti- 4x4 lobby Suzuki introduced an all new Grand Vitara in 2005 and I recently decided to have a closer inspection of one at a cheap Suzuki dealer.

This third generation model is quite a step up from the model it replaced. It is stylish, better to drive, and compares well on price and specification to models offered by Kia, Hyundai and Nissan.

There are two petrol engines a 1.6 VVT with 105bhp and a 140bhp 2.0-litre petrol. Both offer adequate performance and cruise well at speed, but can suffer from a lack of pulling power between 30-60mph, which can make overtaking a drawn-out affair. A 1.9 DDiS diesel, supplied by Renault, with 130bhp became available from late-2005.

The steering is sharp and body roll is much more under control when cornering, even at speed. The brakes are positive and responsive. As with most off-road vehicles the gear change can be a little notchy at times, but otherwise there's a precise feel to the changes and the ride is much better than the old Grand Vitara which was rather unsophisticated and a little uncomfortable.

The Grand Vitara is longer and wider than before and the interior styling is good. There is plenty of headroom and rear legroom on the five-door, the space in the rear of the three-door is a bit tight though. Road and wind noise are kept to reasonable levels, but engine noise can get intrusive under heavy acceleration.

The wide opening tailgate and high roof means that large and awkwardly-shaped objects are easily accommodated, although loading can be quite tricky as it's quite high off the ground. The load area on the five-door is good, while the boot space offered by the three-door is acceptable for a couple, rather than a family. The seats tumble and fold, which gives even the three-door near van-like practicality. Both have a hidden storage bin under the boot floor which is useful for hiding your valuables. Inside there's a large glove box, centre storage bin and bottle holders in the door pockets.

The Grand Vitara gained an impressive four star rating from Euro NCAP for occupant safety and standard safety equipment is good. You’ll find ABS and electronic brake force distribution, dual front, side, and front and rear curtain airbags. All cars have remote central locking and an immobiliser so it should still be there when you return to it.

Like many Japanese manufacturers, Suzuki has a reputation for mechanical durability and like the successful Swift supermini, the Grand Vitara has been designed and engineered for European buyers who now expect a quality interior with a high-grade finish. There are no reports of any reliability problems so you should not encounter anything untoward.

The Grand Vitara has proved to be a worthy adversary against its counterparts from the other 4x4 stables.

Car Loans - Opting For Car Loans Instead of Purchase

The world is a busy place and modern day people are becoming busier due to the numerous tasks that they have to do throughout the day and saving time while traveling is essential to plan for a busy schedule.

Millions of people travel from home to work and back, shopping, dropping and picking up kids to and from school, meeting friends, visiting the doctor, etc. Saving time in traveling has become very important, as people want more free time for themselves and their families. This is where the automobile comes in handy. Buying a car or a second car for the family’s needs is not always economically possible or feasible with, especially with fixed-income employees or small businessmen and traders. This is where Car Loans become a necessacity and come in handy.

A few decades ago, an automobile was a luxury and only the rich and well of could afford to buy a new car. As demand increased, and automobile companies made profits, they increased production and reduced the prices, making the Cars cheaper, easier to acquire, and within reach of the common man. But many still could not afford to pay the price for a Car in one down payment. Many Car manufacturing companies, Banks, and private finance companies came forward to provide Car Loans to people who still could not afford to buy Cars with a full payment for the purchase price. Easy availability of Car Loans was also useful in luring employed professionals working on a fixed salary, self-employed people, small businessmen, and traders, and many people who were hesitant in investing a big sum in purchasing a car.

In the present day, most families in the western world need at least one car for the family and if the family’s savings are not enough to buy a car outright, they can always opt for Car Loans. Most families opting for Car Loans do so out of necessacity as they require a car, but cannot pay the full price. But care should be taken to plan for the Loan installments and managing finances, especially if you are a salaried employee. Many people also give in to their desire to drive a new car and succumb to the sales talk and opt for a Car Loan. These people do not think about their financial situation and default on their Loan installment, which leads to a bad credit rating for the future.

A bad credit rating means that you will have problems applying for loans in the future, even if you later on pay up the installments. But there are many car loan companies, which do give a second chance at Car Loans inspite of a bad credit rating. But this depends on a case-to-case basis and is not a rule for all defaulters. If you are a habitual defaulter and have always paid your installments very late, or not paid the installments for a few months, you are highly unlikely to get a Car Loan.

If you do require a Car Loan, you should first inquire with the Car dealers about the down payments, inquire with the finance company regarding the interest charged on Car Loans, duration of the Loan, installments, penalties for defaulting on installments, etc. then you should go through your finances and calculate whether you will be able to pay the installments properly, with a little left over from your income for emergencies. If the loan payments fit into your finances and you can manage to pay the installments, you can safely go for Car Loans.

Auto Financing - Get a Second Chance at Car Loans

Have you been turned down for a car loan in the past because of a bad credit history or no credit history at all? You may be concerned that if you apply for a car loan a second time, it will further damage your credit rating and you will still be unable to acquire the new car you need.

You shouldn’t have to allow a bad credit rating to ruin your financial life and prevent you from getting the car you need to visit family, commute to work and safely get your kids to school. Even if you have a poor credit rating or not credit rating at all you can still get your hands on a great quality car loan. . Once you have worked out your budget you will able to pick a suitably priced car to match it.

Auto finance companies are now becoming more specifically tailored to meet the needs of people with a bad credit rating. Every company will offer a variety of alternative loans to suit everyone's needs so even if you didn’t qualify for the loan you wanted you can still qualify for an alternative you may not have been aware of. The two main types of auto finance available are secured and unsecured loans. Secured means your car loan will be guaranteed by a main possession. In the case of cars it is usually the car itself although it can sometimes be your home in some cases.

This means if you fail to meet the payments of your car loan, the auto finance company will be able to possess your car meaning you lose money and the car you needed. With these loans it is ultimately much better for you to fully ensure you can afford the loan taking into the account the worst-case scenario. Because of this risk factor these types of loans are much easier to obtain and so many people with bad credit will choose this option.

An unsecured loan does not require a guarantee on any possession but it will require a good credit history to obtain and it is harder to get this type of loan approved. There are also other loan types and special offers available for your car loan such as a no credit check loan that does not require you to have any kind of credit history either good or bad.

This type of loan will test your ability to pay the loan back currently and you will need to be able to provide bank statements to the finance company to show your economic stability. There are also other things you could do to ensure you get your auto finance approved. If you have the time, you can do simple things such as paying household bills regularly and on time to build up your credit rating. This can have a dramatic impact on your credit history and give you a terrific boost for getting that second chance at a car loan within a few months.

You may also wish to consider if the car you have applied for affected your auto finance approval. If the car is too expensive for your current budget or if it is too expensive against your credit history your application may have been rejected on that basis alone. Before you go for your second chance at a car loan application, you should work out a budget that details all the expenses and financing you need. This should include road tax, insurance, petrol, maintenance and your estimated finance loan. Once you have worked out your budget you will able to pick a suitably priced car to match it. Choosing a cheaper car will give you a better opportunity to getting your auto finance approved.

Preparing Your Car For Winter

A treacherous road condition during winter is a bane to all drivers. Driving through snow and sleet doubles the travel time, or even worse, you and your car can even end up immobilized because of the extreme conditions.

While moving to a region with warmer climate may be the permanent solution, there are always certain precautions that are more realistic and achievable for drivers living in winter lands. To make it through the snow season without major issues, here are a few suggestions:

1. Check the Battery.

Fact: Cold weather decreases the performance of a car’s battery. To avoid this situation, you may want to get a plug-in charger. Plug it in at night and attach it to your battery and in the morning you will be assured of a charged battery. It is also important to have your car’s battery and electrical system tested every once in a while. If the battery is almost 3 years old, it may be a good idea to have it tested at local service stations on a regular basis.

2. Check your Anti-Freeze.

Good anti-freeze protects water in the radiator system against freezing and increases the boiling point of the water in the radiator system. To avoid it from leaking, it’s best to check your anti-freeze a couple of times a year. Experts also advise to change your anti-freeze every 2 to 3 years to keep it from breaking down. Anti-freeze is usually diluted with water following an estimate of 50/50 normal ratio. Check the directions on your specific brand to know the exact proper mix.

3. Pressure Check for Leaks.

Conducting a pressure check can wash away any impurities such as rust that may clog the vehicle’s system. Don’t forget to inspect the cooling system for any visible leaks, especially around the water pump, radiator, hoses, freezing plugs, heater core, and clamps. If you notice that the belts are worn out, replace it right away. Frayed belts cannot drive the water pump, no matter how new or unclogged your system is.

4. Oil.

Synthetic oil works well in both low and high temperatures. While conventional oil might lose its viscosity during the bitter cold months, the chemical makeup of synthetic oil keeps the lubrication fluid from freezing up, resulting to better lubrication of engine parts.

5. Tires.

You may want to switch to all weather tires or get specially made snow tires for better handling when driving through the slippery and snowy roads. Keep your regular tires though because all weather tires are not advisable for prolonged normal road use. You can also attach snow chains to tires for increased traction.

6. Windshield Blades.

Proper windshield blades can save you from a snowstorm as much as a good engine and cooling system can. Remember that visibility is the key to accident avoidance.

As for you, it’s best to keep a flashlight, a cell phone, and a medical kit in your car, just in case the weather is too much to bear for your vehicle. Think of survival, so pile up on essential items that will help you get through any unforeseen accidents or situations while driving until the winter season ends.

Performance Upgrades For Cars

You may just use your car for getting from a to b and that’s fine but for petrol heads like me we love nothing more than a fast car. There are three main types of modifications you can do they are style, performance and safety in this article I will tell you some of each.

Safety

Safety is very important and goes hand in hand with performance here are a few safety modifications you can do.

Bigger brakes this will help you stop quicker if you are going at speed on a race track.

Seatbelt harness this is like a normal seatbelt but has more straps so it holds you in place strongerAirbags are a thing that will save many lives when you are in a crash the instantly open and fill with air to soften the blow

Style

Style is great you can really express yourself with the style of a car here a few style modifications you can do

Body kit

A body kits are fiber glass moulds of the front bumper the rear bumper the side skirts and the rear and front guards. Body kits are usually white but can be easily painted and there are hundreds of different styles so you can express yourself how ever you want.

Paint

The great thing with paint is that if you don’t like it you can change it and it is easy and relatively cheap to do. So if I bought a car and it was pink I could easily change it to what ever colour I wanted to.

Graphics

Graphics are a great way to enhance the overall look of your car by putting your anything from your company logo to your favorite band all with special stickers that can come off in a mater of minutes if you want while protecting the paint.

Mags

Mags are one of the most stand out features on a car they are your wheels there are many different styles of mags to fit on any sort of car.

Performance

Performance is in my opinion the best upgrades you can do.

It is the heart and sole of a car.

Big Bore exaust

A big bore exaust makes the tip of your exaust bigger letting more air go out quickly it also makes your car louder.

Pod filter

A pod filter is a pod shaped air filter what makes these great is that with a normal air filter it only lets a little bit of air in but a pod filter lets as much air as possible to the engine.

Turbo charger

A turbo charger uses the power from the exhaust to turn around a fan in a casing very quickly and air goes into the fan and it makes air go to the engine quickly.

Blower

A blower sticks out the front bonnet and sucks up air through the little holes at the top

Conclusion

In conclusion if you add most of these things to your car you will have a mean street machine.

Of all of the necessary components needed to run a car, the transmission is by far one of the most important. It is where all of the gear shifting is done and this type of thing can be incredibly expensive to repair in the event that it becomes damaged. Transmission fluid needs to be checked regularly much the same way that oil needs to be. It is something that you don’t want to forget about if you want to keep your car in the best running condition possible. Checking the transmission fluid is a vital part of car maintenance.

Transmission fluid should be checked around every 25,000 miles or so. The fluid and the filter must be changed regularly so that they do not become dirty. To neglect this could lead to contaminants building up in the fluid and that is not going to be good. You should never mess around when it comes to your transmission.

Always pay attention to your car as you drive. When you get to know how it sounds when operating smoothly, you will know when something is wrong. If you know your car then a new or strange sound or feeling will not be missed by you. Pay attention so that you can assess any situations as they arise.

If you feel that it is necessary or you have a mechanic recommend it, you can always have your transmission fluid flushed out. This will help force out any dirt or grime that may be inside the fluid. Some mechanics recommend against a transmission flush so look into this before you make your choice so you can base it on information.

It’s not a good idea to let your vehicle sit for long periods of time. If it goes without proper service for too long there is a higher chance that you could have metal shavings or other problem items make their way inside. A transmission that is bogged down with metal and junk will need tremendous amounts of care to be in good running shape again.

When you check your transmission fluid, always have your vehicle parked on level ground so that you get the right fluid amount. An angle could throw that off a lot and it is not something that you can guess at. Leave the car idling as you check the fluid. This is one of those maintenance checks that require that the car be left on rather than turned off.

Pull out the transmission dipstick and check what the reading says. If it doesn’t quite reach the full line then it is low and needs to be topped up. Adding more transmission fluid is not really all that difficult but you must be careful not to add too much. If you do not feel comfortable doing this yourself, you can take it to your local mechanic to have it done. Before you add transmission fluid to your vehicle, make sure that it is the best possible one for your vehicle. Not every transmission is the same.

Hella Lights: How You Can Light the Way

Hella lights have been a standard in the automotive industry in the United States for over 25 years, providing both accessory types of lights as well as lighting electronics for vehicles. They are considered one of the most innovate companies, moving from standard types of automobile lights into systems and types of lights and lamps that are geared towards the cars of today and tomorrow.

There are a variety of types of automobile parts, lighting systems as well as electronic components. No matter what type of automobile you drive, they can be used to either replace the standard headlamps and signal lights or add additional lighting to trucks, trailers and other automobiles. One of the most popular headlights is the Xenon light system. This system provides ideal clarity and brightness and is also easy on the eyes for oncoming drivers. There are a variety of halogen type bulbs that provide bright, direct glow under even the most challenging driving conditions.

Specialized technology allows the illumination to adjust depending on the conditions in the environment. For example, dimmer at dawn and during the day, then naturally become brighter as the darkness increases due to nightfall, cloudy or stormy weather conditions or even road conditions due to fog. This is really an advantage for the driver as well as being energy efficient. There is the safety advantage, however, that is most advantageous to drivers.

For those driving Audi A6 vehicles, these headlamps will actually swivel up to 15 degrees to match the contour of the curve, allowing drivers to know how much or how little of a curve they are going into. This added feature also keeps the center of the high or low beam directed immediately towards the center of the road in front of the vehicle, not going straight ahead as is seen in vehicles without the Dynamic Bend Lighting systems. It is highly likely that other vehicle manufacturers will incorporate this safety feature into new models of cars and trucks in the future.

Most would think that hella lights are just headlights, and would be surprised to realize the multitude of designs out there. Several different models of signal lights or lamps come in designs integrated with specific optical technology and reflection lens to provide clarity and easy sight for other drivers. Again, safety features and increasing visibility is a key component in these unique and ground breaking designs.

For those off road enthusiasts these have long been seen as the best possible option for illuminating such rugged terrain. Off road options will deliver a much brighter, wider beam, allowing drivers to see more than just the immediate trail ahead. They can be mounted as auxiliary lights on the front bumper or within the grill for protection, or even mounted on the cab of for a much higher and wider path. Some of the metal lamps even have a unique stabilization type of mount that prevents the beam from bouncing even over very rough terrain. The bulbs and components are extremely rugged and come with a one year warranty for extra peace of mind.

They can be assembled from kits or as individual hella lamps to replace existing units. Kits typically come with bulbs, housings, wiring harnesses and outside bulb protectors. Everything is made simple for you the consumer when looking to upgrade your current vehicle lighting. Just be sure to do your research and understand the parts of each before you make your final decision. The last thing you want is to waste your hard earned money on something that won't keep you and your family safe under all driving conditions.

Is Your Ladies Motorcycle Jacket A Well Stitched One?

Before purchasing a ladies motorcycle jacket, do make sure you test the quality of the stitching of the jacket. Now, assessing the quality of the stitching does not mean simply checking whether the stitches are present or not. The assessment will have to done while keeping the basic purpose of the ladies motorcycle jacket in mind.

The first thing that you should do is check whether the jacket has been properly stitched. If there is evidence of stitches being dropped at regular intervals in your ladies motorcycle jacket, then the jacket that you are holding your hand is a poor quality product.

This is the fundamental requirement that each and every motorcycle jacket must satisfy. The stitching must be uniform and even throughout the jacket. If stitches have been dropped, then the quality of work done is very poor.

If the motorcycle jacket was any other garment, tolerating the poor quality of work may be acceptable. However, since the motorcycle rider relies on the motorcycle jacket to protect herself against injuries due to accidents, tolerating poor quality work is simply unacceptable.

If you find that the stitching is even and uniformed all over the garment and there is no evidence of any stitches being dropped, then you can proceed to the next test to determine whether the ladies motorcycle jacket is a good quality jacket or not.

One should try and determine whether the manufacturer has cut corners by using glue to paste sections of the jacket. While the use of adhesive may be normal in other garments, it is simply unacceptable in the ladies motorcycle jacket.

Caution: even the strongest adhesive will not survive a hard impact with the road.

If adhesive has been used in your ladies motorcycle jacket and if just a single stitch has been made over the pasted section, then there is absolutely no doubt that these sections would give way in the event of a crash.

Use of adhesive and single stitching drastically reduces the quality of the work done. If you find any evidence of just a single stitch throughout the jacket, then do not buy that motorcycle jacket.

Further, the extra protection incorporated into the ladies motorcycle jacket must be stitched separately onto the main garment and should be reinforced by double stitching.

The protective batting will bear the brunt of the intact with the road. If it is fixed only to the garment, the protection offered by the ladies motorcycle jacket will not be the same. Finally, the buyer should test the spacing between the stitches.

The smaller the stitch, the stronger the jacket will be. Further, if there is a variation in the size of the stitch and if the jacket has been stitched with small as well as big stitches, then the quality of work done on the jacket will not be high.

It is only after considering these aspects of the stitching should one come to a conclusion about the quality of work done on the ladies motorcycle jacket. Slow and steady wins the motorcycle race.

The Ace Four: the finest thing on two wheels!
During the World War I era, a number of early manufacturers went out of business or were bought up by stronger companies. William Henderson, who is still considered America's most creative motorcycle designer, sold his company to a German immigrant, Ignatius Schwinn, who started making bicycles in Chicago in 1895. The Henderson had a fine reputation as being America's most luxurious, elegant, and expensive four cylinder motorcycle. Schwinn felt he had taken ownership of the "best of the best" and added it to his Excelsior Line. Despite signing a non-compete clause, Henderson was unhappy and soon began plans for a finer and even more elegant replacement, the ACE.

Henderson would call it "The Ace Four: the finest thing on two wheels!" He began drawing the plans for his elegant new ACE and searching for investors to help finance the new factory. As soon as his non-compete expired production began. Money would eventually run out, and while searching for the finances needed to complete his machine, production was moved, and even discontinued a couple of times.

One tragic cold day, Dec. 11th 1922, Henderson was test riding the new Ace and was struck by a car and killed. Within weeks his assistant, Arthur Lemon, completed the final drawings, and then sold the rights to Indian Motorcycle Co., America's largest manufacturer. Indian produced the bike as the Ace, then Indian Ace, and finally as their own brand, the Indian Four. During the 1930s, it went on to become America's only luxury motorcycle, akin to a Duesenberg or Cord.

The original drawings, numbering approximately 400 pieces, disappeared from view. Lost in the files of the massive Indian Company, the Henderson Ace drawings were assumed to have been destroyed in 1953, when Indian went out of business. Astonishingly, the new owner, Bill Melvin, found the drawings as they were being placed in a dumpster and headed for a land fill. They had sat under layers of dust in a warehouse for years. Bill Melvin says "After spending much of my adult life looking for this type of treasure, it was overwhelming to find what represents the finest work of the most renowned designer in American motorcycle history. And to think they were headed for a landfill; when I found them, I had goose bumps for a week."

The drawings are each signed and dated by William Henderson and Arthur Lemon; they were done on a cloth material and are in beautiful condition. They still rest in the old envelopes from the Indian factory They have added significance in that many of Henderson's inventions are still in use in today's machines.

Please direct questions to Bill Melvin 616-450-0640.

Top Five Essentials to Keep in Your Car in Case of a Winter Emergency

Confused.com offer their advice for those on the road this cold, cold winter.

Cardiff, UK (PRWEB) December 23, 2008 -- It's well known that cars aren't especially fond of the cold - particularly older models - and winter is the time of year that they're most likely to conk out. It's not always possible to prevent breakdown, or a weather-related accident, so it's wise to keep a selection of handy items in your car just in case - especially if you intend to travel to somewhere remote. So from the car insurance experts at Confused.com, here's a list of essentials to keep in your car on the off-chance that you find yourself stranded at the back of beyond…

News Image

It's a smart idea to have a set of jump leads handy, as someone may well be courteous enough to allow you to charge off their battery. Keep the leads in good condition though, and don't ever try to charge a battery that's leaking or looks damaged.
1.   Mobile phone
Most people are glued to their mobiles nowadays, so this may seem like it should go without saying. However, it's worth mentioning that you should take yours with you, and keep the number of your breakdown service handy (if you don't have breakdown cover, then you can find a deal to suit your budget through Confused.com). Also ensure that your phone is fully charged before going on a long journey. Also it's useful to have an in-car charger, but remember that this won't be of much use if your car battery goes flat.

2.   Wrap up warm
It's worthwhile having a blanket or some kind of warm covering to keep yourself toasty. This will prove especially useful if you find yourself sleeping in the car overnight. Likewise, be sure to have some warm clothes. Take gloves and some sturdy boots too, in case you need to go for a hike.

3.   Jump leads
The most common cause of breakdown during a cold snap is a flat battery, so it's always sensible to ensure that it's in good shape. Will Thomas, auto insurance product manager at Confused.com adds "It's a smart idea to have a set of jump leads handy, as someone may well be courteous enough to allow you to charge off their battery. Keep the leads in good condition though, and don't ever try to charge a battery that's leaking or looks damaged."

4.   Spare tyre
Carrying a spare tyre in your car is essential all year round. All tyres should be in a good condition to deal with wet and potentially icy roads. Will Thomas of Confused.com says "If you're not well-versed in changing tyres, it might be an idea to practice in your driveway. It's far better to learn that way than at the side of a fast road late at night while rain lashes down." In addition to your spare tyre, your car will most likely have a jack and a wheel brace - but check before making your journey if you're not sure. It's also worthwhile having a tyre gauge and pump, and regularly checking that your tyres are inflated to the optimum pressure.

5.   First-aid kit
This is well worth having in your car in case of an accident. Keep one in your glove box in case you need to patch up any minor scratches or dings (to your person - not to the car).
Fingers crossed that you won't have to use some of the items on the above list, but having them handy is a sensible precaution. Do bear in mind also that the list isn't exhaustive… There are plenty of other things that could prove invaluable - such as a torch, a bar of chocolate and a good book.

Car Donations Still A Sound Investment During Troubled Times

Online Car Donation, in association with Works of Life International Ministries, As the leading vehicle donation Charity that Gives to other Charities and individuals in need, passed proceeds from car donations, boat donations and other vehicle donations on to countless other charities in 2008, in an ever growing dollar figure that comes in well over what the typical "Charitable car donation" organization may give, proving once again that even in tight times, people still do what they can to support their causes.

The only requirement is that they meet certain ethical standards. Many Charity car donation Organizations will align themselves with almost anyone as long as there is a dollar to be made

California (PRWEB) December 23, 2008 -- Online Car Donation, in association with Works of Life International Ministries, As the leading vehicle donation Charity that Gives to other Charities and individuals in need, passed proceeds from car donations, boat donations and other vehicle donations on to countless other charities in 2008, in an ever growing dollar figure that comes in well over what the typical "Charitable car donation" organization may give, proving once again that even in tight times, people still do what they can to support their causes.

OnlineCarDonation.org logo
OnlineCarDonation.org logo

Some of the biggest recipients of car donations made through Online Car Donation (http://www.onlinecardonation.org), dollar-wise, have been national non-profit organizations. C. L. Arballo, Online Car Donation CEO and Director, reports that, nationally, Children's causes, especially those assisting children with life-altering or life-threatening medical conditions and those concerned with the education of our youth, received the greatest share and are this year's most-chosen charitable donation recipient.

When charity car donors (http://www.onlinecardonation.org/car-donation-faq.htm) make their donations through Online Car Donation, they can choose where the proceeds from their vehicle's sale will go. The list of charitable choices is extensive, as it includes the Organization of the Donor's choice. This now can be any of the thousands of Organizations currently operating in the U.S and abroad. "The only requirement is that they meet certain ethical standards. Many Charity car donation Organizations will align themselves with almost anyone as long as there is a dollar to be made", says Arballo. "We feel a great responsibility to inform and educate Donors that have NOT done their homework. Anything from the provision of data made available by the I.R.S., to pointing them in the direction of concerns that have been brought to the public's attention that they may not be aware of. "The number of charities we provide assistance for has grown over time and we can expect more of the same in the future," says Arballo. "We've added charities as they've been requested by vehicle donors, and as we've thoroughly investigated them to make sure they qualify."

Though most major national charities (http://www.onlinecardonation.org/car-donation-testimonials.htm) request assistance, hundreds of small ones do as well. Arballo cites the charities, Muscular Dystrophy Association and The American Red Cross, as recipients of donations. "These may be some of the biggest donation recipients in dollar terms," he says, "but in terms of the impact a donation can have on their organizations, they are worthy recipients, and they were both chosen by a multitude of charity car Donors in 2008."

Online Car Donation, in association with Works of Life International Ministries,, founded with the philanthropic mission of assisting those in need, has developed over the years into the leading vehicle donation Charity that Gives to other Charities and individuals in need, expanding beyond education and the care of our youth into one of the largest direct car donation charities in the country. Last year, the not-for-profit charity reached new milestones. It had contributed more than ever to other charities and individuals in need, all from vehicle donations. Even being recognized by the Paramount televisions Dr. Phil show and commended for their efforts and contributions.

Online Car Donation, in association with Works of Life International Ministries,, the leading vehicle donation Charity that Gives to other Charities and individuals in need, (http://www.onlinecardonation.org/car-donation-why-us.htm) is a non-profit, IRS Code 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charity operating under the Religious Non-Profit Corporations Law under the meaning of I.R.S. section 501 (c)3. Online Car Donation, in association with Works of Life International Ministries, has been a trusted avenue for charity funding since 1997. Proceeds from tax-deductible donations of vehicles go to qualifying non-profits.

Improve Your Gas Mileage – 7 Proven Tips

With gas prices still on the rise, I was wondering if there was anything else that I could be doing that could improve gas mileage without costing anything. So I went looking for some ideas that would allow me to use the hidden fuel in my gas tank. There are bunches of ways to increase gas mileage, I thought these were the best because they were free. That’s right, here are 7 things you can do right now to get more miles per gallon that don’t cost a thing.

1. Don’t use the air conditioner unless you need it.

If you live in a hot zone like Florida or Arizona and there were only a few days every year you can open your windows and get some fresh air and not sweat off any important body parts in the process, then this option may not be for you. But if you live in area where the climate is nice most of the time you can use less gas by leaving the A/C turned off.

2. Make sure that your tires are properly inflated.

Okay this may not be a free option because some places could charge you to use the air but it usually only cost a quarter. It’s well worth the money to make sure that you have the right amount of air in your tires. And I’ll give you two reasons why. First, under inflated tires cause more resistance during travel more resistance equals fewer miles per gallon. Second, tires cost money, lots and lots of money, and when your tires are properly inflated, you extend the life of your tires as well as improve your mpg.

3. Clean out your car.

I know I avoid cleaning my car as well. But if you get rid of any unnecessary items in your car, then you reduce how much your car weighs. By reducing the weight in your car by as much as possible, you increase your gas mileage. One area you may want to check besides the trunk is on top of our vehicle. If you have luggage racks or some other sort of carriers on your vehicle, you may want to remove them. By removing them you decrease the weight and air resistance and as a result you get better gas mileage.

4. Use your cruise control.

By using your cruise control you not only alleviate some strain on your foot, you also stay at a nice steady speed and your vehicle will run more efficiently. The more efficiently your car can run, the more miles per gallon you will see.

5. Reduce your speed.

Since we are on the subject of cruising. Keeping your highway speed at 55 mph can significantly improve your gas mileage. This is a hard one for me because I lived in Germany for a while and I enjoyed driving the Autobahn where there are no speed limits. But when I use the cruise control, I have a better chance of staying at the right speed. Another great benefit of reducing your speed besides the improved gas mileage, is the reduced risk of getting a speeding ticket.

6. Avoid traffic.

This one can be a tough one depending on where you live. But if you can adjust your schedule so that you are commuting when traffic is less congested, you will save a lot of money by saving gas. An added bonus is that you look good when you get into the office before everyone else. And you get more done because no one else is there to bother you.

7. Fill up when temperatures are cooler.

This one is new for me but I saw it in more than one place so it must be true. The gas pumps deliver more gas when the temperature is lower. I guess if it’s hot, then the gas expands and takes up more space. I guess this is also why you are not supposed to top off your tank. If you don’t leave any room for expansion, you could have a serious problem on your hands.

We may not be able to do anything about the price of gasoline at the pumps. We can do something about how often we have to put gas in our vehicles. Do whatever you can to improve your gas mileage. Some other tips for saving on gasoline that you may have to spend some money on include: making sure that your car is properly tuned up, use a good engine oil, when you are in the market for a new car, buy a car that get better gas mileage than the one you currently have. And as always, I recommend using my famous gas pill that can improve your gas mileage by as much as 30%. It pays for itself each and every time you put fuel in your vehicle.

Pros and Cons of Owning a Hybrid Car

You might not like this, but there are some negatives to owning a hybrid car, but then again some of them are fairly insignificant. Even so, you might want to know about what disadvantages there are to owning a hybrid car. But don't get too worried. The disadvantages are not that bad.

Hybrid cars are more expensive

Only a small percentage of consumers say they will buy a hybrid for their next car purchase. That's probably because hybrid cars are comparatively expensive. Another reason is that many people are a little concerned about buying a car that depends so heavily on a battery pack like a hybrid does. Why are they so concerned? They are understandably nervous about what would happen if the battery pack failed. You can't really blame them as hybrid car battery packs are usually very expensive, and would cost a lot to replace if not covered by a good warranty.

There's some doubt about the value of hybrid cars

Some people think hybrid cars are good for the environment and that everyone should have one, but some people beg to differ. There is lots of research being done out there to see what people really think about hybrid cars, and its easy to be swayed by the latest opinions but you need to weigh up the pros and cons for yourself. Buying a hybrid car is just like buying a normal car. There are pros and cons to every type of car whether it is a hybrid or not. Don't expect all hybrid cars to be perfect as there is no such thing as a perfect hybrid car yet because it is still fairly new technology.

Are hybrid cars just a trend?

Called the "wave of the future," it may seem like hybrid cars are really cool cars to have right now. And it's true. Although they are now on the cutting edge of automotive technology, hybrid cars may soon be outdone by something better. Car manufacturers are constantly working on creating more fuel-efficient cars, so who knows what's around the corner?

Hybrid car manufacturers say their battery packs will last a lifetime, but will they?

Ever bought a warranty and then had something happen to your car that wasn't covered? Even though a hybrid's battery is supposed to last a lifetime, chances are, something unforeseen might happen that will negate this warranty. How much does a hybrid battery cost? A lot. Of course, there's risk involved when you make any car purchase, but with the hybrid car, there are risks you never thought of. Just make sure that you are aware of this when thinking of buying a hybrid car.

The bottom line is this. Before buying a hybrid car, you should understand that you are buying into a new technology that is still passing through a teething stage. Therefore, who knows what surprises this new technology might throw at us? Nobody really knows if hybrid cars are the future of motoring but at least they are a start. After all, you don't see many people driving a Model T Ford around nowadays but they did jumpstart the age of the motor car so who knows where hybrid cars will lead us?

Once thing is for sure though. The gas-powered combustion engine will one day go the way of the Dodo, especially with the rising cost of oil, and hybrid cars are a step towards that day.

Motorsports Advantage: A New Way to Enjoy the Races

Motorsports fans can now have a personal assistant at their service over the phone for $110 a year. This assistant, called Motorsports Advantage, can help them find tickets, lodging, restaurants, pit passes, food delivery or just about anything they need to enjoy the races.

Lake Havasu City, Ariz. (PRWEB) December 22, 2008 -- What might make an unusual Christmas gift that race fans could enjoy throughout the 2009 season? What about a personal assistant that can take care of food, lodging, reservations, track information and a host of other services to ensure a hassle-free racing experience?

Not upper crust enough to have someone waiting on them hand and foot? But what if, for $110 a year, such service was always at hand, just a phone call away?

Most people are familiar with roadside assistance services. Help with a flat tire, a dead battery or other road problem is available over the phone. But now Coach-Net, a major supplier of such assistance for RV travelers, has taken that kind of help to a new level of personal concierge service that was previously thought of only in connection with the upscale traveler. And it's geared specifically to motorsports enthusiasts, whether they be NASCAR fans, motorcycle fans, motocross high jumpers, buggy racers, ATV fans or dragsters.

Motorsports enthusiasts, even those who like to get down and dirty at the off-road trails and tracks, can now get the equivalent of a personal assistant for $109.50 a year plus $10 application fee. Called Motorsports Advantage, this new service provides timely over-the-phone help with the myriad of details that come with participating in a motorsports event. And while it was developed by Coach-Net, it is not limited to RVers.

Need a camping spot at the track? Just call. Curious about the point standings or looking for a pit pass? Just call. Need to find a nearby hotel in a certain price range for some visiting friends? Just call. Or maybe you suddenly need to find an auto parts store, or a nearby drug store? Just call. Heck, even if you run into legal trouble or (God forbid) need a bail bondsman. Just call! (See comprehensive list at the end of this article)

"Our service uses an extensive proprietary database geared toward freeing motorsports enthusiasts of any concern except enjoying the races," said Tabitha Lederer, Coach-Net director of affinity sales. "We're their local guide to the amenities available as well the necessities that crop up. Even if they have access to Internet on the road, which many people don't, the specialized databases we use often enable us to more quickly provide the needed information, while zeroing in on the best rates and deals available. We continually monitor how expeditiously our people answer your call and your query, and we strive for the highest standards in that regard."

The new service was just launched earlier this year and the initial feedback so far "has been very positive," said Lederer. "But right now, we're they only service of this kind available. People are still getting used to the idea that they could have something like this for only $110 a year. After all, how many of us think in terms of having a personal assistant? For the average motorsports fan, that's not a familiar travel perk."

"But it's also true, especially for the traveler, that there are a myriad of details to attend to. Most people are going to the races to have fun, plain and simple. It's those kind of details they want to leave behind for a while, not remain enmeshed in."

That is precisely the reason that the growth of concierge services has been identified as one of the top ten trends in the travel industry for 2007-2008, according to the Randall Travel Marketing report. Says the report: "Time poverty underpins this trend. Regardless of the type of traveler (business, leisure, meeting, etc.), today's traveler is impatient with the process of 'finding the good stuff.' From preferred restaurants, to lodging, to things to see and do, travelers report frustrations with having to dig through tons of brochures, websites, etc., to find travel choices. They want someone or something that … gives them instant and easy information."

"People just need to think about all the things they wish they could have done, or just forgot to do, at the last race because they didn't have time," said Lederer. "Motorsports Advantage provides a fairly inexpensive solution to that, especially if you attend multiple events each year."

Clifton, NJ (PRWEB) December 22, 2008 -- This time of year, dirt and snow track into the car and become ingrained in the carpets, posing a real problem for many car and truck owners. BuyAutoTruckAccessories.com recently added another viable solution for their customers by adding to their Nifty products line. They have added Catch-it floor protection to their large inventory of car and truck accessories.

"You can't even do your Christmas shopping this time of year without staining your carpets with mud, slush and chemicals from the parking lot," said Bob Moore, marketing manager of BuyAutoTruckAccessories.com. "Nifty products protect your car's interior from moisture and soil in ways that regular floor mats can't."

You can't even do your Christmas shopping this time of year without staining your carpets with mud, slush and chemicals from the parking lot
Nifty products offer a variety of levels of protection for the interior of your car, truck, or SUV. BuyAutoTruckAccessories.com has consistently carried the Nifty Catch All line, which features floor protection with custom fit and colors to match the interior of your vehicle exactly. These mats have a substantial lip around the edge to catch rain, melted snow, mud, and spills, preventing them from reaching your carpets. Their heavy-duty moisture barrier keeps liquids from soaking through, demonstrating their superiority to regular floor mats.

New to the company's inventory of Nifty products, is the Catch-It line of floor protection. This accessory features drip channels that not only keep moisture and soil off your carpets, but also help keep them off your shoes and clothes as well. The raised design helps to scrape mud and snow from the bottoms of your shoes, while the deep channels pull moisture and soil down and away from your shoes and any dragging hems. When the mats become soiled, they can be cleaned quickly and easily with the hose.

Nifty also makes custom mats for SUV cargo areas. The snug fit, raised lip, and moisture barrier ensures that you don't have to worry about soiling the inside of your SUV with dirty or wet cargo.

"Trying to keep the interior of your truck or SUV clean in the wintertime has always been a hassle," Moore said. "We're happy to be able to solve this problem for our customers with Nifty floor protection."

Patented Business System Offers Novel Alternative to Bailouts or Bankruptcy For the Automotive Industry

A patent issued to Donald Spector, Chairman of New York College of Health Professions and one of the most prolific inventors in the country, defines a system of customer loyalty in which a person buys an option on the stock of a company, but retains the option to take product at full price, during a specified period of time if the price of the stock does not go up.

New York, NY (PRWEB) December 21, 2008 -- A patent (United States Patent: 5765141) issued to Donald Spector, Chairman of New York College of Health Professions and one of the most prolific inventors in the country, defines a system of customer loyalty in which a person buys an option on the stock of a company, but retains the option to take product at full price, during a specified period of time if the price of the stock does not go up. This patent has been sold to Intellectual Ventures, a company of Nathan Myhrvold's, one of the largest companies in the world for Intellectual Technologies.

If the automakers were to agree to this position the United States Government could simply take their money back in cars, trucks or other products of the Big 3 in the event that the stock went down or the companies were not able to meet predefined financial criteria.

Instead of the government having to rely only on a financial instrument, the deal could be automatically turned into the assignment of a government purchase of cars, trucks and other output of the company. This would avoid the problems of moral hazard and put the government only at risk of limiting suppliers for certain contracts, a practice often done by the government in emergencies or even with contracts awarded to minority contracts.

"The government needs more potential solutions at its disposal than either bailing out industries or working through bankruptcies. What is needed in America are new solutions; it was patents and ideas that built our country and they are what can get our nation out of trouble," says Donald Spector, Inventor and Chairman of Innovation Fund (www.innfund.com).

"There are a wide variety of economic business systems that are generated by inventors throughout the country that involve arrangements with international companies and others that we simply do not see the lawmakers using or even being aware of. The lawmakers are using a few tools in a day and age in which technologies allow for a much broader range of tools to aid them in their decision making.

No one involved in our technologies wants them to be used to make a moral hazard statement or a political statement, we are simply pointing out that there more tools available to lawmakers and industry leaders than they seem to know about, whether they are patented or not," added Spector.
Mr. Spector is one of the most prolific inventors in the United States and does extensive work advising governments, major corporations and universities on long term strategies for the future.

Innovation Fund LLC owns proprietary technologies from Computer and Satellite technologies to Consumer products and Entertainment properties. It licenses to or joint ventures with Fortune 500 companies and is a worldwide leader in innovation.

BuyAutoTruckAccessories.com Adds New Line of Ventvisors

BuyAutoTruckAccessories.com, an online retailer offering name brand car and truck accessories at affordable prices, recently started offering Seamless Ventvisors, a new product line by Auto Ventshade.

Clifton, NJ (PRWEB) December 21, 2008 -- BuyAutoTruckAccessories.com recently added a new product line to the wide selection of car and truck accessories on their website. Auto Ventshade Seamless Ventvisors, is a line of window deflectors designed especially for luxury vehicles.

"Owners of luxury vehicles naturally want auto and truck accessories of the same high quality," said Bob Moore, marketing manager of BuyAutoTruckAccessories.com. "We are proud to be able to fill this need with our new line of Auto Ventshade Seamless Ventvisors."

Owners of luxury vehicles naturally want auto and truck accessories of the same high quality
Window deflectors are plastic shades, usually in dark or smoke finishes, that go along the tops of the windows on a car. With their sleek, stylish designs, these ventvisors match the high end detailing of luxury cars and trucks so well that they appear as part of the car's original styling. Contributing to this illusion is a design feature that overlaps the front and rear visors with the door frame, avoiding the interrupted "add on" look of many window deflectors. Select models of the Seamless Ventvisors line even feature chrome edging to match the car's original trim.

Auto Ventshade Seamless Ventvisors are aerodynamic and are shaped so that when the car's windows are cracked, fresh outside air can enter the car while rain and snow cannot. This helps to vent and cool the car's interior without exposing the driver and passengers to the elements. In sets of four or six pieces, Seamless Ventvisors are custom created for each make and model of car or sport utility vehicle. Every piece is carefully manufactured and inspected before leaving the warehouse.

"If you love the look of your luxury vehicle, you will want to be sure that everything you put on it maintains or enhances its appearance," Moore said. "As the name would suggest, Auto Ventshades' new line of window deflectors are designed to integrate seamlessly with each car or truck's original styling."

Vauxhall Zafira – Now Why Didn’t I Think of That?

Of course the most obvious answer to this question is “because you’re not a car designer dummy”. Even if I was though I probably would have raised a cheer for the person who solved the age old automotive conundrum of how to transport a family and all their junk around in something smaller than a removal lorry and without the styling and handling characteristics that go with it.

Before you say anything I realise that this was not the greatest problem that mankind has faced and we need to put things into perspective here but nonetheless the solution still required a stroke of genius.

1999 was the year when Vauxhall introduced the Zafira to a rapturous audience. It reinvented family motoring and caused the demise of the trusty estate car or at the very least gave it an identity crisis. Vauxhall was unrepentant however and the near decade that has elapsed since its launch the Zafira is still being purchased in large numbers and is cherished throughout this land almost as much as the family pet..

It would be a lie to say that the seven-seat Zafira can match the very latest compact MPVs for steering feel or agility, but the handling is safe and predictable. Grip levels are strong and body lean through bends isn't excessive. However, at times the suspension damping doesn't cope well over rough surfaces and it lacks control under hard cornering but what do you expect in an MPV? The brakes are strong with very short stopping distances especially at low speed. The aircraft-style handbrake is neat although a bit fiddly at first

Renault could claim that they were first into the compact MPV sector with the Scenic but it is the seven-seat Zafira that undoubtedly transformed it and has inspired such competition as the Grand Scenic, VW Touran, Toyota Verso and Mazda 5. Some manufacturers only offer five-seat versions of their Zafira rival, but Vauxhall has optimised the Zafira in seven-seat form, for those who just want five seats it offers the Meriva instead. The line-up of models is huge and in addition there are special editions too, which change periodically. More recently Vauxhall has taken the model more up market with an 'Elite' trim.

The Zafira offers a wide range of petrol and diesel engines but its weight means that the smaller less powerful units do sometimes struggle a bit. The Zafira is fairly popular as a fleet vehicle so Vauxhall offers a 1.9-litre diesel but retail customers are accounted for as well with more affordable petrol engines. This is fortunate, as the Zafira sometimes looks a little expensive compared to some rivals, particularly when you consider standard equipment levels that could be more generous.

The latest Zafira, with its rakish headlights and smoother lines, is undoubtedly a better-looking car than the original. The interior is also stylish and constructed from quality materials. The driving position is high and reassuring whilst head, shoulder and knee room are ample and the seats are comfortable.

The Flex7 folding seat system is still holding up well and by folding the seats flat you can enhance the already-capacious boot considerably. The smaller-engined petrol and diesel Zafiras really impress for fuel economy and retained values are still surprisingly good considering how many used Zafiras are available on the market, servicing costs and intervals are very competitive too as a result of the enviable reliability record of the car.

All in all the Zafira shapes up well and whilst still being ubiquitous in numbers who would choose to be different just for the sake of it? Besides if you still want to cling on to your young carefree days where your right foot seemingly solved all of life’s problems then there’s always the Zafira VXR available at a Vauxhall dealer near you.

Used Ford Explorer – A Lot of Car For Your Money

With the current high cost of fuel, the gloomy economic future not to mention the whole global warming thing a used 4x4 might not be uppermost on your mind right now. The good news however is if for whatever reason you were thinking of buying one there are some absolute bargains to be had out there in the somewhat depressed world of the used 4x4.When Ford introduced the Explorer to the UK in 1997 it must have been pretty confident that it would secure healthy sales. Not only was the car the world’s bestselling 4x4 at the time but the market for luxury SUVs was positively booming especially in the UK.

However, some UK buyers were put off by the £25,000 price tag and rather heavy fuel consumption and as a result sales were rather disappointing to the extent that just four years later Ford stopped selling the Explorer in Britain.

A few years on and the demand for 4x4s has plummeted, but if you are in the market for a large luxurious vehicle then a used Ford Explorer has much to commend it.

The Explorer was only available with one engine, a 4 litre V6 petrol unit producing a hefty 208hp which was more than enough to power the 2,000kg vehicle from 0-60mph in less than 10seconds and on to a top speed of 100mph. The slight downside to that is that it does less than 20mpg which is not terribly encouraging.

The Explorer’s main market has traditionally been America which again until recently would not have been the slightest bit bothered by such a thirst for fuel. As a result the US influenced styling is fairly evident in the round front end and generous seats. Rear legroom is on the tight side if the front seats are pushed right back but there is no shortage of shoulder room thanks to the vehicle’s 6ft 5in width.

In terms of load carrying the Explorer is pretty hard to beat. There is a useful split rear tailgate that opens separately, similar to that on the Range Rover, which makes loading and unloading easy, and there’s also a step built into the rear bumper that makes lifting luggage onto the roof bars fairly straight forward.

With a towing capacity of more than 2,500kg it will easily handle a standard caravan, trailer or horse box. Boot space is generous, and although the high ground clearance can make the leap a bit challenging for small or old dogs the optional rear dog guard is ideal for keeping man’s best friend safely contained.

American buyers always demand a high level of standard equipment on their cars and UK buyers benefit from this. All models come with air-conditioning, cruise control, twin airbags, factory sunroof and remote central locking as standard and the XLT model has the addition of leather upholstery and heated front seats with electric adjustment.

On road the Ford Explorer is a surprisingly decent drive, and despite its size and weight generates fairly minimal body roll. The slightly dated rear leaf springs soak up bumps quite well and the robust traditional chassis gives the vehicle a strong feel, while nicely weighted power steering gives a reassuring drive.

Off road, Ford’s “Control Trac” 4x4 system, switches automatically from rear-wheel drive to all-wheel drive as required, while a dash mounted switch allows you to select between high and low gear ratios when conditions require it.

With used prices now being so good the Ford Explorer is certainly a bargain alternative to the usual contenders from Mitsubishi, Land Rover and Jeep, but as with all older cars you will need to check the vehicle over carefully.

Spare parts are still easy to find at Ford dealers but they can be expensive, for example front wishbone ball joints are not cheap to replace, and be wary of dirty oil, which can often signal a block in the oil feed on the timing chain tensioner. Repairing this will result in a large bill. As with all older vehicles, items such as air-conditioning and electric seat motors need to be checked for performance.

The Ford Explorer may have received a lukewarm reception from British buyers when it was first launched but if you are looking for a big, comfortable, reasonably priced and well equipped 4x4 it certainly deserves a second look.

The Ford Explorer is a used 4x4 bargain at the moment as Jon Barlow discovers at Used Ford.

VW Tiguan -The Late Arrival That Stole the Show

Isn’t it annoying if you have been waiting patiently at a bar for ages to be served and someone breezes in and gets served straight away. In most walks of life there is invariably some opportunist waiting around the corner to steal the limelight from the rest of us.With this thought in mind it seems that Volkswagen was able to time the launch of their compact 4x4 to perfection especially as they have sat back for a number of years and waited to see what the competition was doing and then simply breezed in with the Tiguan.

This was a masterstroke on the part of VW as they were able to assess all the shortcomings of the other vehicles in this class and introduce new technology that was way ahead of anything else on the market. Some would argue that the Tiguan was a little late to arrive at the party but I believe that by biding their time VW has been able to offer a vehicle that is simply light years ahead of its rivals.

Sure there have been successful offerings from other manufacturers in the meantime, not least Honda with its CR-V, Mitsubishi with its Outlander which has spawned the Citroen C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007 and Nissan with the Qashqai. However, it is the Land Rover Freelander that the Tiguan has its eye on.Although the Tiguan is not the most flamboyant off roader, it is almost certainly one of the best conceived. For a start it comes packed with gizmos that leave drivers of an old Land Rover Discovery like mine slack-jawed in amazement. These include an electronic self-parking system, a rear parking camera, a panoramic sunroof and a sat nav and stereo system that can store 30 gigabytes worth of your favorite garage tunes or alternatively nursery rhymes when the kids are on board.

More practical is the fact that the Tiguan can tow 2½ tons, more than any other car in its class, this is accompanied by a neat, optional pop-out tow hook. Further features include a steering system that prevents the steering wheel from breaking your thumbs during serious off-roading, a sat nav system that can work out where you are even if you are off road and a front passenger seat whose backrest folds forward for extra long loads.

It has a front-end design that allows it to mount steep banks without scraping the bumper, and comes with a sophisticated battery of electronic off-road aids. These include hill-descent control, pioneered by Land Rover, which brakes the car to crawling speed on steep slippery slopes, and a hill-hold control system that operates in conjunction with the electronic handbrake so you don’t inadvertently roll backwards off a cliff. The car’s electronic brain also activates a limited slip differential to eliminate wheel spin, alters the brakes to suit loose surfaces and reduces the accelerator’s sensitivity and there’s even a compass if the sat nav does pack up.All Tiguans come equipped with permanent four-wheel drive known as 4Motion, in VW language. This divides power equally between all four wheels, ensuring maximum traction. Once on the move it will send 90% of the engine’s energy to the front wheels if conditions are good, in order to improve fuel economy. The Tiguan is fitted with a 2 litre direct injection 140bhp turbo diesel which is considerably quieter than clattery old-school diesels, especially at motorway cruising speed.

The Tiguan’s impeccable road manners are complemented by its comfortable and well appointed cabin, which is also exceptionally well laid out. The sat nav screen is sited conveniently high, the instruments and controls are easily read and the electronic handbrake gives plenty of storage space between the front seats. Also impressive given this is a family car, is that the back seats are equally as accommodating, and when slid into the rearmost position still provide generous legroom. The seat which is split 60:40 is easily folded too. The boot is well designed and reasonably large, even with the rear seats pushed fully back.Practical design combined with innovative technology is what VW is all about these days and when you factor in a standard of finish that’s a cut above you can see why people are prepared to spend a bit extra on a Volkswagen.
